There’s no better time than the present to start working on your wellness routine, though most people use January as an opportunity to implement new, healthy habits. For some, it’s as simple as taking a month off from drinking alcohol, while others try new diets, workout routines and lifestyle changes. If you’re hoping to swap your favorite cocktail with something that leaves you feeling euphoric instead of hungover, you’ll love what adaptogen drinks have to offer.
For those unfamiliar, an adaptogen refers to “herbs and other plant materials that help the human body adapt to stress,” as Everyday Health explains. “They can enhance physiological processes towards homeostasis — balance — over time, or as the body becomes ‘adapted,'” “This is Your Brain on Food” author Uma Naidoo, MD, tells the outlet. “Many people turn to adaptogens as a more natural way to manage ailments, including stress, fatigue, and poor sleep.” Next time you’re feeling sluggish, mix up one of these recipes!
Adaptogenic Cold Brew Coffee Banana Smoothie
This delicious smoothie idea comes from Will Frolic For Food, who swears by two adaptogens – maca and reishi. The latter has a bitter flavor that brings anti-inflammatory properties while te former helps balance hormones and improve fertility.
Ingredients:
- 4 oz cold brew concentrate
- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup ice
- 1 tbsp cashew butter
- 10 oz water or unsweetened plant milk
- 1 tsp reishi mushroom powder
- 1/2 tsp maca powder
- Cinnamon, to taste
Instructions:
- Combine all ingredients in a high-powered blender,
- Mix until smooth and frothy.
- Serve in a chilled glass and top with cinnamon.
Magical Adaptogenic Matcha Latte
If you prefer to get your caffeine from matcha rather than cold brew, Breakfast Criminals‘ magical latte should be at the top of your Dry January drink list.
Ingredients:

- 1 cup milk of your choice
- 1 tbsp maple syrup, to taste
- 1 tsp butterfly pea flower powder
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- Pinch freshly ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ashwagandha powder (optional)
