For most people, breakfast is a quick bite on the way out the door. Between rushing to work and dropping the kids off at school, the meal often gets overlooked. But there’s something calming about slowing down and truly enjoying the food—and the moment. While your schedule may be packed, creating a cozy breakfast nook can help you savor the start of your day.
A classic addition to any kitchen or dining room, breakfast nooks have been quieting the chaos in homes for decades. They’re the perfect place for families to come together over pancakes and weekend brunches or to quietly sip coffee as you ease into the workweek. But they’re much more than just a place to dine. For many homes, breakfast nooks serve as makeshift offices when working from home or homework stations.
Even more compelling, a breakfast nook doesn’t necessarily have to be a nook. While most are built into corners and flanked by benches and cushions, you can create a similar atmosphere on an empty wall. Given the versatility, it’s no wonder breakfast nooks are trending on social media. If you’ve wanted to carve out a space in your home, there’s never been a better time to do so — and with the tips below, you can easily create a cozy nook of your own.

Decide On a Location
Location is everything when building a breakfast nook. Corners are a popular area that inherently makes the space feel cozy and welcoming, but you’re not limited to just those areas. An empty wall works just as well and can even allow for more space if you have a larger family. Another key to your location is its proximity to the kitchen. If you’re opting for an area outside of the kitchen, look for a space adjacent to the room to allow for easy travel with hot dishes and beverages.

Consider the Lighting
Lighting is essential for creating a cozy atmosphere, and that goes tenfold for breakfast nooks. If you have a space with lots of windows, consider building your nook nearby to embrace the sunlight and scenic views. Enclosed spaces can still have a cozy feel without natural light. If your room isn’t flooded with sunlight, add a striking pendant lamp above your nook for an elevated look.

Table & Seating Is Crucial
Dining furniture needs to be two things: Comfortable and spacious. Even if you live in a small apartment, the table should have adequate space to work, eat, and relax. Round dining tables are a common choice that blends stylish design with the classic appeal of a breakfast nook. Rectangular tables are also a great option for nooks along the wall or large families. As for the seating, you can opt for wooden benches, dining chairs, or a combination of the two to round out the look.
