In a shift towards fostering more inclusive workplaces, especially since the results of the 2024 Presidential Election, major retailers across the United States have shown varying levels of commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. While many companies have stepped up to maintain their DEI programs, Target recently made headlines by scaling back some of its DEI initiatives following controversy and consumer backlash.
The impact of DEI initiatives extends beyond internal corporate structures, though implementation remains complex and sometimes contentious. Many retailers continue actively engaging with their communities through educational programs, mentorship opportunities and targeted investments in underserved areas. However, Target’s retreat from its diversity commitments has sparked intense criticism from Black consumers, civil rights organizations and other minority groups who view this as a concerning step backward. Several advocacy groups have called for boycotts, arguing that corporations should strengthen, not diminish, their support for marginalized communities, especially in the face of opposition.
Consumer response has highlighted deep divisions, with minority communities expressing particular outrage over what they see as corporate capitulation to anti-DEI pressure. Organizations like Color of Change and the National Urban League have reported that 72% of Black consumers say they’re less likely to shop at retailers who abandon DEI initiatives. Meanwhile, #BoycottTarget has trended on social media platforms, but this time from those supporting diversity initiatives.
