Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland Team Up To Help Reduce Homelessness in Their Hometown of Houston

If it’s one thing Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Kelly Rowland know how to do is collaborate to make the world a better place. The bestie duo is working together to give back to their hometown of Houston. According to a press conference earlier this week, Knowles-Carter and Rowland have teamed up with Harris County to open a housing complex in the midtown area of Houston.

The Knowles-Rowland project will create 31 permanent housing units, announced county leaders. According to county records, there will also be case managers, peer specialists, and services like transportation, and mental, physical, and behavioral health support. This initiative is estimated to cost around $8.4 million, with the American Rescue Plan contributing $7.2 million in funds. Other financial backers such as Rice University will contribute funds as well, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Harris County judge Lina Hidalgo praised Knowles-Carter and Rowland for their consistent commitment to Houston, as both artists have given back to the city throughout their careers. The two, along with their former Destiny’s Child bandmate Michelle Williams, built a youth center in Houston using money from one of their first hit singles “No, No, No Pt. 1.”

Reducing Homelessness in Houston

“Harris County and the city of Houston, jointly with the coalition for the homeless, have reduced homelessness in the middle of the pandemic by 20%, and we’ve been able to hold that reduction,” said Hidalgo in a press conference this week.

“We just did the homeless count again, so its initiatives like this one I certainly will be supportive of it no matter whose behind it, but its especially interesting, I think, because there are those names of Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, who, of course, have been supportive of the community for a very long time,” Hidalgo continued.

Hidalgo shared that there will be a bigger announcement of the Knowles-Rowland project in September when the Renaissance tour comes to Houston.
