Working from home has its perks. From having lunch in your private dining room to getting your laundry done midday, there are lots of benefits to the WFH schedule. While I admit that these two things in particular are some of my favorite aspects of working from home, creating a home office was the factor that ultimately sold me. However, designing a workspace that inspires and motivates me isn’t easy, and I’m constantly seeking new ideas. So, when I came across Kellie’s (@deeplymadlymodern) airy home office, I was completely locked in.
Takeaways
New
Like Kellie, the walls of my office space are stark white. While white walls suit some of the other rooms in my home, they are anything but inspiring for an office. As a creative, Kellie’s sentiment seemed to be the same. An interior design, style, and lifestyle creator on TikTok, she aimed to transform her completely bare room into something that would stimulate her creativity. Fortunately, inspiration was lurking just outside her door on her patio.
Before planning her dream office, Kellie began renovating her patio space at her Palm Springs home. The Southern California city is known for its cool colors and gorgeous Art Deco architecture that lines the sunshine-filled streets. For Kellie, this is where her inspiration truly came from. The city had influenced the colors and design of her patio, which became a hub of ideas for her home office.

The Inspiration
While she was drawn to the beautiful shade of blue from the sunlit tarp covering her patio, it wasn’t the only hue to influence her office design. Like any great designer, she began building a mood board around her theme. At the heart of it all was the city she loved. Sourcing images of quintessential Palm Springs decor, she embraced the sunny blue color with contrasting elements. Wood paneling, textured walls, and smooth velvet would become key players in the aesthetic of her new home office. But her vision wasn’t about weighty or dark designs. While it’s true that these elements tend to have a heavy feel, placing them in a sun-filled room against the blue hue instantly gave them an airy appearance.
Embracing Color
Much of this room’s design relies on the painted wall. That said, she wasted no time trying to find the perfect shade. After searching online, she settled on a rich periwinkle hue by Sherwin-Williams called Moonglow. Instead of using it to add a panel of color to the walls, she opted for an accent wall and used just one quart to cover the space. Painting often requires several coats, but for Kellie’s airy look, just one was enough to create the sun-kissed effect.
Layering Textures
The mood of this home office is uplifting and filled with design gems, paying homage to Palm Springs’ luxe yet casual style. Texture plays a significant role in the serene atmosphere of the desert city. From the gravel walkways to the stone-covered buildings, palm trees, and sand, Palm Springs is all about layering textures and using them to add dimension to a space. For Kellie’s home office, she brought in textured blinds in a soft stone shade. The window treatment proved to be the perfect way to embrace texture without going overboard.
