Creative director Marissa Calhoun isn’t afraid of experimenting with colors, textures, and patterns in her home decor. We saw this firsthand in her episode of Home & Texture’s House Tours season two—Calhoun’s Inglewood home is whimsical, with accents of bubblegum pink throughout the interior and exterior, and each room is a true representation of her personal design taste and lived experiences. One room that really stands out is her powder room. The creative director curated a fun space for guests that is layered with storytelling and striking aesthetics.

When it came to designing her powder room, Calhoun said, “It’s a space where people tend to be really afraid to experiment with in most houses because the space is so small, they often think darker colors will shrink it even more.”

However, she decided to take on the challenge and designed a powder room that transports guests into an entirely different world. “I knew that I wanted this space to be just as warm and just as inviting as every other space in my house. I knew that I wanted to inject a lot of bold and bright colors,” Calhoun shares in the episode.

The first thing Calhoun did when designing her powder room was choose a base wall color to give the space a pop. She then added a layer of fun with a contrasting tropical-inspired wallpaper, representing her journeys and travels. The wallpapered wall is complete with a raffia-framed wall mirror, motivational quotes in gold frames, and gold wall decals.

Let Your Imagination Run Wild

If you want to experiment with designing a powder room like Calhoun’s, start by choosing a focal point and building the rest of the room around it. Remember not to shy away from bold and vibrant choices in art, mirrors, and lighting—they can make the space feel curated and personal. Let your imagination run wild and give your guests an experience they’ll always remember.
