Issa Rae is the definition of a multi-hyphenate. Her work spans industries and pushes boundaries but always centers around one common thread: Black culture. Whether she’s telling stories of friendship on TV or film or crafting a narrative of fellowship through wine, she never fails to make Us feel seen and celebrated. Now, she brings that same energy to her latest venture, a supper club called Somerville. She’s brought that same energy to her latest venture, a supper club she calls Somerville.

Located in the heart of South Central Los Angeles, Somerville is an explosion of Black culture that ranges from contemporary cuisines to craft cocktails and luxury lounge experiences. It should come as no surprise that the vibe is designed to celebrate Rae’s hometown and honor its rich history. It’s much more than an eatery and draws from Rae’s unique ability to bring people together in a space filled with positive energy.

Showcasing the Rich Flavors of California

The menu offers a mix of styles, with each dish aiming to showcase the rich flavors of California. Whether you have a taste for traditional southern greens or steak, you can expect to be met with something delicious and interesting. For example, there’s the Collard Greens Lasagna, which blends the savory leafy green with a creamy Béchamel sauce. There is also an assortment of dishes designed to be shared for the ultimate communal dining experience. The cocktails have a similar creative flair, with names like Dolemite that celebrate Black art and the golden age of film.

Rae’s sparkling personality is infused into every inch of Somerville, and in true Issa form, the announcement came via Instagram. A few days before Thanksgiving, she took to Instagram to share a video showing the space from the street view to the sleek decor inside. From the velvet-clad booths to the chandeliers and grand piano, the interior is the epitome of luxury and Black excellence. As the clip continues, viewers are met with glimpses of the food and the overall good vibes of Somerville.

An Ode to Black South Central L.A.

In the caption, the actor and entrepreneur explains that Somerville came to life through an idea of fostering a neighborhood lounge that complemented the special community of View Park-Windsor Hills. To that, she adds that Somerville is “an ode to the classic, artistic past of Black South Central L.A.”

This restaurant is another feather in Rae’s entrepreneurial empire. Never one to be boxed in, she embraces each venture with vigor and enthusiasm. Guests and fans can expect nothing less than that when entering Somerville. The restaurant is open Wednesday-Saturday for dinner hours, and while a reservation isn’t required, you’d be better off making one in advance.
