In a world that often feels overwhelming and cluttered, people are seeking solace in simplicity. This extends to the most personal and intimate space in our homes: our bedrooms. Many homeowners are gravitating towards a minimalist approach to bed-making, adopting a style akin to the monastic beds of monks who value humility and simplicity.
Instead of countless throw pillows and ornate bedspreads, people are opting for clean lines, simple patterns, and fewer pillows. The appeal of a monastic bed lies in its focus on functionality. A bed should invite you to rest, not overwhelm you with an excess of decorative elements.
Achieve the Monastic Bed Look
To achieve the monastic bed look, the steps are simple. Stylist Colin King shares the steps in a recent Architectural Digest article. Begin by removing all unnecessary pillows from the bed—you want to start with a blank slate. Next, ensure that the top sheet is smooth and wrinkle-free. Lay your comforter flat over the top sheet, ensuring that there are no wrinkles or folds. Then, fold the bed cover down about a third of the way down the mattress to create a tidy edge.

Keep it minimal with the pillows by opting for two pillows of the same size. Lay the pillows flat, side by side, leaving a small gap between them. Position the pillows to rest on top of the folded bedcover, extending about three inches over the crease toward the edge of the bed. Fold one side of the bedcover over the pillows towards the headboard, followed by the other side to ensure that everything is smooth and even.
Complete the finishing touches by tucking in the bedcover or letting it drop naturally on the floor. Add a cozy blanket or quilt at the foot of the bed.

A simple bed-making routine can transform your bedroom into a sanctuary, a place where you can truly unwind and escape from the chaos of the world. A monastic bed, with its emphasis on simplicity and functionality, is the perfect antidote to our often overly complicated lives. By adopting this style, you are choosing to prioritize your well-being and create a space that truly feels like a retreat.
