Moving to a new place with a clean slate is a thrilling opportunity to craft the life you’ve always dreamed of. It is extremely tempting to get out there and buy a ton of stuff just for the sake of having it on the wall. But slow down! This is a marathon, not a sprint, and you’ll thank yourself later for being mindful when selecting pieces for your new home. If you’re in a season of starting over and moving, here’s how to prioritize what you need, decide on the essentials, and what can wait.

Budget Wisely

Starting fresh provides you with a chance to reevaluate your financial situation. Create a budget that not only covers your immediate needs but also allows for savings and investments. Tracking your expenses is essential, and you can easily do this with budgeting apps like Mint or YNAB. A well-structured budget will give you peace of mind and financial security.

Essential Furniture

When it comes to the essentials, there are a few bare minimum items you’ll need to be comfortable. Consider prioritizing a comfortable bed—even if just a mattress—for the time being, a sofa, a dining table with chairs, a desk with a chair, and basic kitchen appliances. Be on the lookout for sales, and think about second-hand furniture stores or online marketplaces to save money. Things that can wait include:

  • Bedframe
  • Dresser
  • Coffee table
  • Entertainment center
  • End tables
  • Nightstands

Essential Kitchen Items

When you move in, you’ll want at the very least a pot and a skillet, a set of plates, a spatula, a cutting board, cutlery, cups, a microwave, and at least one good knife. Things that can wait are:

  • Blender
  • Toaster
  • Nice glasses and mugs
  • Baking accessories

Essential Electronics

Your home may or may not come with appliances like a fridge, oven dishwasher and washer/dryer. If not, those might take priority. Otherwise, you don’t have to spring for many electronics in the beginning, if anything you might want to invest in a good TV, a a vacuum, and some floor and table lamps.

Essential Miscellaneous Items

Stock up on essential items like paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, a shower curtain, clothes hangers, and any toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Then, of course, there’s bedding—good sheets, comfortable pillows and blankets. Add some towels for the bathroom as well as hand and face towels. Lastly, cleaning products like all-purpose cleaner, disinfectant, laundry detergent, and dish detergent. Things that can wait include:

  • Art and decor
  • Plants
  • Curtains

Embrace Minimalism

Starting fresh is an excellent opportunity to embrace minimalism. As you unpack, evaluate each item you own and keep only the things that truly bring you joy or have a practical purpose. Clearing the clutter from your life can be liberating and allow you to focus on what truly matters.

Establish a Support Network

Starting over can be emotionally challenging outside of moving. That’s why building a support network in your new community is critical. Dive right in and attend local events, join clubs, or engage in social activities related to your interests.

Job and Career

If your move is related to a job or career change, give your best at your new workplace. Network with colleagues, show your dedication and seize opportunities for growth within the company. If you made the move without any plan, set out to find employment, explore job openings in your field and consider online courses or certifications to enhance your skills and marketability.

Explore Your Surroundings

This is what the adventure is all about! Take the time to explore your new surroundings. Seek out local attractions, parks, restaurants, and hidden gems. Immerse yourself in the culture of your new city or town and get familiar with the area surrounding your new home!
