Which 5 U.S. States Rank the Highest for Bed Bugs?

Sure, bed bugs can be found virtually anywhere, but there are several factors that can increase the likelihood of an infestation depending on the state.

Bed bug infestations are unfortunately common in densely populated areas due to the close proximity of housing units and heavy foot traffic. As a result, apartments, condos, and homes quickly become breeding grounds for these annoying pests. But luckily, there are ways to keep them out of your home for good.

How To Prevent a Bed Bug Infestation

To prevent a bed bug infestation from happening in your home, here are two quick tips for keeping those pesky creepy crawlers away:

Be proactive.

The best way to avoid an infestation is through prevention. For example, whenever you’re traveling, be sure to thoroughly inspect your luggage and hotel room — i.e. the bed and bedding, furniture, curtains, etc. — for bed bugs. If you spot a critter or two, alert the hotel staff immediately so that you can be moved to another room.

Additionally, if you love the unique nostalgia of second-hand furniture, make sure to treat it before you bring it home. You can do this by steam cleaning, vacuuming, or using a bed bud-proof cover to keep it safe from pests.

And of course, keeping your space clean, tidy, and free from a lot of clutter can reduce hiding spots for bed bugs.

Act quickly.

If you notice one too many bed bugs in your living space, you’ll need to act quickly to keep it from turning into a full-blown infestation. This means reaching out to a pest control professional, as they have the necessary education and experience to effectively treat any potential or existing infestations, plus prevent future outbreaks.

When dealing with bed bugs, early detection and treatment are vital. The sooner you act to prevent an infestation, the more likely you are to reduce further distress down the line.

The Worst U.S. States for Bed Bugs

Sure, bed bugs can be found virtually anywhere, but there are several factors that can increase the likelihood of an infestation depending on where you live. This includes everything from population density to socioeconomic factors.

And fortunately, innovative sleep company Mattress Next Day is here to help you understand these important factors so you can reduce your chances of encountering these annoying pests. Recently, the company performed a research study on the worst states for bed bugs based on search history. And while the data is surprising, knowing this information can help you be better prepared (or avoid the area entirely). Here are the top five U.S. states where infestations are most prevalent:

Oklahoma

Topping the list of the worst states for bed bugs is Oklahoma. Mattress Next Day reports a whopping 4,114 searches for bed bugs per 10,000 residents. The high incidence of creepy crawlers in Oklahoma can be due to a variety of factors, with population density, hot climate, and housing conditions being likely culprits.

West Virginia

According to the study, the “Mountain State” a.k.a West Virginia ranks at number two on the list with 3,781 searches.

West Virginia is home to a stunning natural landscape featuring rolling hills, flowing streams, and dense forests. But unfortunately, these picturesque conditions make it pretty easy (and comfortable) for bed bugs to thrive.

And because much of West Virginia is rural, many residents may have difficulty reaching pest control services. This makes it more challenging to fix infestations effectively.

Ohio

Coming in at number three on the list is Ohio. With 3,657 searches, Ohio is no stranger to bed bugs. As a densely populated state with many urban centers like Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus, it’s easy for these pesky critters to hitchhike their way into your home.

Missouri

Next on the list of the worst states for bed bugs is Missouri. Missouri had 3,585 searches for bed bugs, which is understandable given their hot summers and cold winters, which makes for the perfect climate for bed bugs to thrive.

Kentucky

Last but certainly not least is Kentucky. Like Missouri, Kentucky is home to a climate that’s pretty conducive to bed bugs. And the 3,529 searches for the little critters only further support this fact.

Beyond that, the housing conditions in certain rural areas of Kentucky can contribute to the problem, too. Older buildings that aren’t properly maintained typically show signs of wear and tear, including cracks and crevices. These and other hiding spots found in or on older buildings give bed bugs a place to lay low — and breed.
