Interior designer and plant content creator Tracey Hairston has a gift for telling stories through design. Inside her Chesapeake, Virginia home, the guest room does more than just welcome visitors—it reflects a lived-in sense of vibrancy, soul, and heritage.

The guest room, which also doubles as one of the most used spaces in the house, is grounded by two rich, caramel-toned leather sofas from Poly and Bark. “Sometimes you have to invest in pieces for long-term use,” Tracey shares with Home & Texture. The $5,000 investment was worth every penny for comfort and longevity.

Throughout the room, her earthy, modern eclectic aesthetic shines. A plush swivel chair in goldenrod velvet contrasts beautifully with a Moroccan leather pouf and a sculptural black coffee table layered with textured ceramics and design books like “Brown Behemians: Honoring the Light and Magic of Our Creative Community” and “AphroChic: Celebrating The Legacy of the Black Family Home.” A vibrant textile artwork spans the main wall, channeling organic movement in shades of terracotta, mint, and clay.

Every object feels intentionally placed—from the wooden tribal masks that nod to African craftsmanship, the greenery spilling out of ceramic vases, and the mirrored cabinet painted in a soft olive green. Hairston notes that nearly everything in the space is a marketplace or thrift store find, save for a few foundational pieces sourced from At Home and Walmart.

“What I love most about this space is how I was able to incorporate my culture with vibrancy,” Hairston says. “You can walk into this space and feel right at home. It gives you a visual view of color and pattern that is also calming.”

In a home she shares with her husband, eldest daughter, and granddaughter, this guest room has become more than just a space for visitors—it’s a vibrant reflection of the values she holds dear: comfort, creativity, and cultural pride.
