Afroman (born Joseph Edgar Foreman) is a rapper known for his laid-back vibe. He’s kept hip hop lovers laughing with hits like “Because I Got High” but has kept his personal life relatively low. While his music and unforgettable lyrics have been the reason for his journey to success, there is much more to the 50-year-old besides his great sense of humor. In 2022, Afroman found himself making headlines after the Adams County Sheriff’s Office performed a raid on his Ohio home.
This incident was motivated by unfounded claims, but the lyricist didn’t let the moment go to waste. In true Afroman fashion, he used the police footage in a music video, ultimately profiting off the media attention. The event changed his living situation and thrust him back into the spotlight unexpectedly, raising curiosity from fans new and old about where the “Colt 45” hitmaker is living these days. Here’s what he know about his lowkey Ohio residence, as well as a look back on Afroman’s California roots.
Afroman Spent His Early Years in California, Mississippi and Nevada
Afroman was born in Los Angeles, California, where the hustle and bustle of the city inspired his creativity. According to a 2007 interview with the Lincoln Journal Star, the West Coast icon wrote one of his earliest rap songs in the eighth grade after a teacher had him kicked out of school for sagging his pants. From there, he skyrocketed to superstardom with the aforementioned “Because I Got High,” which he’s admittedly grown tired of performing.
“Crowds come out and I got to sing this and I got to sing that. I’m going to have to come up with some other character so I can do something different,” the Grammy nominee told the Star at the time. Still, Afroman relates that people relate to the lifestyle he portrays in his music. “Since I coincidentally have lived this life, I can refer to it and entertain a group of people.” Overall, though, he believes moderation is essential. “There’s a time for me to drink and there’s a time for me to go out there and sing and let other people drink. You can pretty much determine when you deserve a beer. That way you don’t have to go and get yourself a new pancreas,” Foreman joked.
In his youth, the rhymer left LA with his family for a brief stint in Mississippi, but they came back to South Central before long. From there, he spent time living in Palmdale and Las Vegas, but has always felt a connection to his Southern roots, settling down in Hattiesburg with his family. At the time of his 2007 interview, Afroman was enjoying a traditional home-cooked feast of “cornbread, fried chicken and potatoes and a big slice of cake,” made with love by his mother-in-law.
His Raided Home in Ohio
As he’s gotten older, Afroman’s desire to live a private life has become increasingly career. The Ohio-based rapper built a life for himself in Adams County on a private and secluded property. This offered ample land and a more rural lifestyle compared to his childhood in California, allowing the entertainer’s kids to grow up out of the spotlight. Despite his best efforts to remain reclusive, Foreman’s home became well-known after the Adams County Sheriff’s Office raided it in 2022, based on allegations that were later proven unfounded.
The incident was connected to a tip that Afroman’s home contained a “dungeon” for kidnapping but investigation confirmed there were no such facilities on the property. As CBS reports, the search also was related to efforts to uncover drug paraphernalia. Ultimately, they seized $5,000 cash he had earned from gigs, leading Afroman to clap back on his Lemon Pound Cake LP the next month. Per the Washington Post, seven officers launched a lawsuit against Foreman, his label and a music distribution service, “alleging that the rapper unlawfully used their personas for a commercial purpose and subjected them to emotional distress and humiliation.”
He replied, “I feel I have every right to do what I’m doing. And I think I took the most smartest, positive route. I didn’t go flip them off in the middle of the street and throw trash cans through their sheriff’s department door. I licked my wounds. I made songs. I did the best I could do.” In particular, Foreman is upset that his children (10 and 12 at the time of the raid) were “traumatized” by officers breaking down the door and storming in; one was reportedly carrying a rifle, the other a handgun and large bulletproof shield.
As for the property’s specifics, it’s a relatively remote location, fitting with Afroman’s preference for privacy and space. Not much has been shared about it but in footage of the raid, the home itself is rumored to have been a modest, rural estate. It was surrounded by wooded areas and open land—ideal for someone who values solitude and creative freedom.
