Whether you read The Truths We Hold: An American Journey or not, there are a few facts that Vice President Kamala Harris’ supporters already know.

First, she prides herself as a cook, especially when it comes to serving Sunday family dinners, which may have rice and yogurt, potato curry, dal and idli on the table. And if she’s anything like her mother, guests will smell freshly baked cookies.

Second, there will be some coffee-less Taster’s Choice jars on the counters or cabinets somewhere.

Third, the “No Trespassing” sign that homeowners put in their backyards or windows is unnecessary at this point. The two-time presidential candidate made it clear to Oprah Winfrey (and all the viewers of that “Unite for America” virtual rally in September) that she supports the Second Amendment. Literally.

Where Does Vice President Kamala Harris Live?

While vice presidents’ offices are located on the White House property, every vice president since Walter Mondale (who served under the 1977-81 administration of former President Jimmy Carter and was the Democratic candidate in 1984) has lived on the grounds of the United States Naval Observatory. The white 19th century house at Number One Observatory Circle in northwestern Washington, D.C. was built in 1893.

Originally intended for the superintendent of the United States Naval Observatory (USNO), the chief of naval operations liked it so much that he kicked out the superintendent so he could live there in 1923. While vice presidents may have initially preferred to stay in their own homes, the cost of securing these private residences continued to increase. By 1974, Congress agreed to refurbish the house at the Naval Observatory as a home for the vice president.

However, due to scheduled renovations, Harris and her family were unable to move in when President Joe Biden won the last election in 2020. Harris’ family briefly stayed at the Blair House, the official president’s guesthouse until the spring of 2021. (More on that later.)

One Observatory Circle has 33 rooms spread across 9,000 square feet of living space. With a private area upstairs, the entertaining space is on the first floor. The home features turret rooms (circular rooms that were commonly built in castles), inglenook fireplaces, verandas and a heated pool. Instead of a central hall, the rooms connect to each other.

Interior designer Sheila Bridges was hired to bring a little bit of Harris’ California style, including a pink library and privately paid-for accents sprinkled throughout the home.

What Was VP Harris’ House Style Before the One Observatory Circle Move?

The vice president has packed up boxes a few times over the years: her childhood duplex apartment in an Oakland, California; a home in Montreal during her mother’s medical studies; Howard University’s campus in Washington, D.C.; an Oakland apartment at the start of her law career; and a short-lived stay in a San Francisco loft less than one month before being sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United States.

Although she waved goodbye to her D.C. luxury condo (which sold for $1.85 million) that she owned during her senatorial term and is now living at One Observatory Circle, she and her husband Doug Emhoff reportedly still own a mansion in Brentwood, California. Zillow estimates its value at $5 million. Emhoff reportedly bought the home in 2012, two years before he married Harris and the two became joint owners. The four-bedroom home (expanding 3,500 square feet) is in a ritzy, multi-million dollar neighborhood.

Where Will Harris Live Next?

Whether Harris’ next move is back to her Brentwood Mansion or this 55,000-square-foot home is anybody’s guess. November 5 will decide where her moving boxes go next.
