At Home & Texture, The Art of Home explores how creativity, culture, and personal identity show up in the spaces we live in every day. Our Cool Moms series highlights stylist, creative mothers whose homes reflect not only their design sensibilities but the lives they are building for their families.

The Art of Home Banner

For Philadelphia-based photographer Taylor Baldwin — publicly known as Mama Photog — home has always been about more than aesthetics. As a creative who built her career celebrating Black women through photography, Baldwin approaches interior design from the perspective of creative spaces that feel warm, expressive, and personal.

A Home That Feels Like a Warm Hug

For Baldwin, the goal of her home has always been about comfort. “When people walk into my home, I want them to feel like they’re experiencing a warm hug,” she says. “I love hosting my family and friends, so it was really important to me that my space feels like somewhere you can be comfortable. I decorated every corner to inspire me, and I hope it does the same for everyone who walks through the door.”

That philosophy shows up in the way the space is layered — thoughtful details, meaningful artwork, and objects that reflect the people and experiences that matter the most to her.

A Love Letter to Black Women

Baldwin’s photography centers on celebrating Black women, and that creative mission naturally extends into her home.

“My work is rooted in making Black women feel seen and appreciated, and that definitely pours over into my design choices,” she shares. “My home is a personal love letter to myself, and sharing that gives other women permission to do the same. Buy the disco balls, fall in love with yourself, and give yourself a beautiful, safe space to land.”

Throughout her home, walls are filled with art created by Black women, including some of Baldwin’s own photography.

Designing a Home With Motherhood in Mind

Motherhood has always shaped how Baldwin thinks about the space she’s creating for herself and her daughter Malia.

“Well, besides avoiding the white couch because my daughter and I spill things on a daily basis, I knew it was important for her to watch her mother turn a space into a home through her own creativity,” Baldwin explains. “This home had to be a direct reflection of coziness with both of us in mind.”

That sense of creative freedom extends to her daughter as well. Baldwin intentionally encourages her daughter to treat their home as a place where imagination is welcome. “Our walls are filled with art by Black women, myself included, so she is consistently reminded of what she is capable of. She also has full range to decorate her room however she wants. I want her to know her creativity can roam free here, too,” Baldwin shares.

A Bedroom Sanctuary Filled With Light

While the entire home reflects Baldwin’s style, there is one room that feels especially personal.

“My bedroom is my favorite room in the home. It’s the space that not everyone gets to experience, filled with plants, disco balls, and light. It honestly feels like the most complete space, the one I truly got right,” she says.

For Baldwin, the room represents a space designed entirely with her own comfort in mind.

“My whole home is my mood board coming to life, but that room was the one where I only considered myself.”

A Living Room That Tells a Story

If the bedroom is a sanctuary, the living room is where the story of Baldwin’s life unfolds.

“My living room tells the story of family,” she says. “There are photos of my art and a photo of me and my daughter, and so many little details that give you a glimpse of what matters most to me.”

The space holds particular emotional meaning for the photographer. She found the apartment during a major transition in her life, and the home became the backdrop for rediscovering herself.

“I found this place after a breakup, and it became the space where I fell in love with myself while showing my daughter what betting on yourself looks like,” says Baldwin. “From the artwork to the coffee table books, I crafted a beautiful story of making a home in my own way.

And like many family living rooms, it’s also where everyday life unfolds.

“We can sit on the couch together and feel safe enough to unpack the day and have our girl talk moments.”

A New Chapter on the Horizon

Now, Baldwin is preparing for a new season — one that includes a bigger home and a growing family dynamic.

“We are preparing to move into a bigger psace and I am so excited to really test my decorating skills and let my wildest mood boards come to life,” she reveals.

The next home will reflect another shift in her life, as Baldwin’s boyfriend joins the household and her daughter witnesses a new chapter of growth.

“This home will be different because it won’t just me and my daughter. My boyfriend is also a part of this new journey, and my daughter is witnessing so much in this new season of my life, including what it looks like to be loved well and to build something new together.”

Design inspiration for the new space is already taking shape.

“For this home, I want to draw inspiration from public spaces I love. Think jazz lounge, botanical garden, and a cozy café.”

What Home Needs Now

With Malia entering her teenage years, Baldwin says the emotional purpose of home has become even more important.

“Malia is only getting older, so it is really important to me that she always feels safe enough to just exist at home,” she says. “Navigating being a teenager can be a lot, and home should never be one of her worries.”

The idea of creating that sense of safety is something Baldwin learned from her own mother.

“I watched my mom make a house a home for me and my brother no matter what season of life she was in. I watched her enjoy her wine, find peace in her room, and host her friends on the weekend.”

For Baldwin, that example became the blueprint.

“She was the blueprint for me and truly showed me that home could never just be four walls. My daughter will always understand the importance of that.”
