There’s a difference between filling a living room and designing one with intention. Amber Kamat’s space makes that distinction clear.

In her Atlanta home, the interior designer and professional organizer approached her living room as more than a place to sit. It’s a space inspired by what she returns to every day: family photos, music, television, and film. Instead of following a singular trend or aesthetic, Kamat focused on creating a room that feels cohesive and lived-in.

Kamat describes her design style as mid-century modern and contemporary, layered with color and culture. That combination shows up in how the space functions. Every piece of furniture and decor has a role, whether it’s for comfort, storage, or display.

Many of the larger furniture pieces were sourced locally, including a black sofa and rust-colored swivel chairs from Atlanta-based retailer Intaglia Home Collection. Lighting from West Elm adds a more refined edge, while IKEA shelving brings in structure. Throughout the room, storage boxes, bins, and frames from HomeGoods help keep everything organized without taking away from the overall look.

The balance between design and organization is central to how Kamat approaches her home. As a professional organizer, she understands how quickly a space can feel overwhelming without systems in place. Here, storage is built into the design from the beginning, allowing the room to hold books, media, and personal items while still feeling intentional.

But the heart of the space is what it represents. “I love this place because my love for family photos, music, TV shows, and movies runs deep,” Kamat shares. “I wanted to design and curate a space in our home that celebrates all four.”

That idea carries through the entire room. Instead of treating personal interests as secondary to the design, they become the foundation of it. The result is a living room that feels uniquely hers.

It’s a reminder that good design is all about how a space is lived in and what matters enough to be a part of it every day.
