While every month is deserving, February is a time for celebrating Black culture in all its many forms. From art and music to Black businesses, large and small, it’s a time to come together and support our many initiatives. However, with the recent efforts of the new administration, things have gotten a bit sticky. The decision to rescind Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices in many industries has put many people in an unpleasant situation.

With major retail companies like Target choosing to stand with Trump’s decision, it can feel like an injustice to shop the aisles of their stores with the same enthusiasm you once had. However, there’s never been a more critical time to support Black-owned businesses, especially at these particular retailers. The road to landing an endcap display or setup in Target for Black brands isn’t easy. Black businesses are notoriously underfunded and passed over by retailers for countless reasons, making it even more important to support them now.

Target has long championed Black-owned brands with initiatives such as the Target Forward Founders accelerator program, which aims to help brands during the early stages of their business, and its 2022 commitment to spending $2 billion with Black-owned businesses by 2025. The landscape for brands owned by POC and LGBTQ+ founders is changing at a rapid pace, but with small measures of support, we can ensure that the brands continue to thrive.
