In 2025, you may be wondering if statement rooms are still popular. Over the years, design trends have favored minimal and pared-down aesthetics, which have ruled the trends. But with a new wave of saturated colors and tones taking center stage, the allure of a bold statement room is back. The rise of these looks has many of us, including this writer, leaving millennial gray in the dust and looking for new ways to get creative in our homes. While searching through TikTok for inspiration, I came across a New Jersey-based interior designer who provided a simple, cost-effective solution.
In her video, aptly titled “Money Well Spent,” she gave a glimpse at her latest DIY project involving a small can of olive-toned paint and a piece of striped paper, which served as the inspiration for her room’s makeover. Unlike many other home transformations on the app, her new look didn’t require demolition or an expensive overhaul. Instead, she showcased how being creative and crafty can still go a long way in interior design. Keep reading to see how she took her space from plain and boring to bold and lively.

One of the elements that makes this transformation unique is the room itself. The space isn’t large or spacious. Instead, it is an awkwardly shaped alcove made to be the laundry room. It features angled walls and a low ceiling, which can be difficult to navigate when undergoing a dramatic transformation. But this creator used the design to her advantage. The shape provided an opportunity to flex her creativity and proved to be the perfect structure for a stripe pattern.
She then showed off a tiny $6 can of paint, holding a vibrant olive shade. Painting a room usually takes several supplies, including primer, paint rollers, brushes, and covers. However, with little space to spread out, the stripe pattern allowed her to create the same kind of transformative look without the extra tools or work. Beyond the affordable paint, she used a simple paintbrush and a long leveler to ensure the stripes were straight and evenly spaced.
This method requires precision and patience to get right. A traditional paintbrush can leave behind streaks, so it’s important to work slowly and steadily. In her video, she demonstrates how keeping to the pace and paying attention to the details of each line helps create a clean pattern. Once the walls were completely covered in stripes, she opened the door for the big reveal and showed off her new laundry room. The accented walls, paired with a soft glowing globe lamp and lush houseplant, give the room a lively feel while also evoking major calm energy.
If you’ve been itching to spice up a room with color but are hesitant to cover it with paint, this stripe pattern is a good option. It’s budget-friendly and easy to DIY over a weekend for almost instant results.
