In today’s world, even your laundry choices can impact the environment. Fortunately, DIY eco-friendly detergents offer a way to keep both your wardrobe and eco-conscience clean. These homemade alternatives are not only better for the planet but also easier on your wallet. Let’s explore how to create your own detergent, transforming laundry day into a step toward a more sustainable future.

Why Go DIY with Your Detergent

Making your own detergent goes beyond just being eco-friendly. Commercial detergents often contain harsh chemicals and come in plastic jugs that contribute to waste. By switching to a homemade option, you reduce plastic use and control what goes into your wash—and, ultimately, our water systems. Using natural ingredients means less pollution. Homemade detergents avoid phosphates and sulfates, which can harm marine life and ecosystems.

Health and Skin Benefits

Many store-bought detergents can irritate sensitive skin. By making your own, you can select gentle ingredients that are as kind to your skin as they are to your clothes.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Creating your own detergent requires a few basic ingredients, many of which you might already have:

  • Borax: A natural mineral that boosts stain removal and cleaning power.
  • Washing Soda: Not to be confused with baking soda, washing soda is essential for breaking down stains and softening water.
  • Bar Soap: Choose a natural, unscented bar or one with a fragrance like lavender. Grate it finely to use as the base of your detergent.

Steps to Make Your Eco-Friendly Detergent

  1. Grate the Soap: Use a cheese grater to grate your chosen bar soap finely.
  2. Mix the Ingredients: Combine one part grated soap, two parts washing soda, and two parts Borax. Mix well.
  3. Store and Use: Keep your detergent in a sealed container. Use about two tablespoons per load.

Add a Bit of Scent

Who says your DIY detergent can’t have a signature scent? Add a few drops of essential oils like lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus for an aromatic touch. Feel free to experiment with combinations to create a unique blend.

What About Liquid Detergent?

If you prefer liquid detergent, simply dissolve soap flakes in boiling water, add washing soda and Borax, and top it off with hot water. Let it cool, and use ¼ to ⅓ cup per load.
