One of the easiest ways to feel and look put together is to iron your clothes. If wrinkled clothing is the bane of your existence and you hate spending time ironing—there are easier ways. Money-saving expert Jason Higgs shares his knowledge with Home & Texture on alternatives for ironing out wrinkled clothing without pulling out an ironing board and heating up an iron.
Make a DIY wrinkle spray.
Making a wrinkle spray with items you most likely already have at home? Yes, please! Higgs shares, “All you have to do is add a teaspoon of fabric softener or hair conditioner to boiled or distilled water and mix it up in a spray bottle.” After making your concoction, lightly spray the wrinkled areas of your clothing and hang it to dry for a few minutes. The key is to not overspray the piece, especially if you’re in a rush, as it can take longer to dry.
Hang clothes in the bathroom while showering.
Knock two birds out with one stone by hanging your wrinkled pieces of clothing while taking a shower. You can hang them either on the back of your bathroom door or on the shower door so they can be hit with steam. For best results, Higgs suggests, “You should make sure to have all doors and windows closed in the bathroom so that as much steam as possible can build up.”
Use a damp towel.
All you need is a towel, water, and your hands to get wrinkles out of your clothing—it’s that easy. Make sure that the towel is big enough to cover your piece of clothing. Lay your article of clothing down on a hard, flat surface, and then lay your damp towel flat on your clothing while applying pressure with your hands to the wrinkled areas. Higgs advises using warm water when dampening the towel, as the warmth will help lift wrinkles more effectively. Hang the garment to air dry, and the wrinkles should have disappeared once dry. If you don’t have access to a towel, you can use a paper towel.
Use a tea kettle.
If you don’t have a steamer, use a tea kettle. Hang your clothing on a hanger and then hang it on a wall or door frame. Once the kettle has reached boiling point, hold it below the clothing and let the steam hit the wrinkled areas. “Just make sure not to hold the kettle too close to the garment and wear heat-protective mitts so you don’t get burned,” Higgs advises.
Throw wrinkled clothes in the dryer with a damp dryer sheet.
One of the quickest ways to get wrinkles out of your clothing is to throw a lightly dampened dryer sheet and your clothing in the dryer. Dry on a high heat level for 10 minutes. “The key for success with this method is to immediately remove the article of clothing after 10 minutes so that it is not sitting still in the dryer, because that will cause wrinkles to form again,” says Higgs.
