Black voices are reshaping the wine industry. From celebrity-founded brands like Issa Rae’s Viarae Prosecco and Taraji P. Henson’s Seven Daughters Moscato to major partnerships with industry juggernauts and Black-owned vineyards, the landscape of Black culture in wine is changing. But it’s not just happening on the industry side of things. Pioneering how Black culture and wine harmonize is just as prevalent today, with businesses like The Wine Garden.

Founded by mother-and-daughter duo Nazaret and Favian, The Wine Garden is redefining the realm of Black wine drinkers. In their Philadelphia-based garden, they’re doing something special and unique.

Beer gardens are common in almost every city. As a place to convene, taste, and explore craft brews, they’re a hub for new and seasoned beer drinkers. They are the inspiration for Nazaret and Favian’s wine garden. As the first of its kind, The Wine Garden is a creative environment for wine lovers to gather, sip, and learn about wines.

Described as an urban oasis, the garden offers something unique in the wine world. Much more than a place to sip wine, it blends stylish and feminine charm with events to create a unique experience. Their tea party brunch, for example, combines traditional brunch fare with chic day party vibes.

While Black-owned wine bars are growing acThis Mother-and-Daughter Duo Created Philly’s First Wine Garden—And It’s an Outdoor Oasisross America, The Wine Garden’s distinct ladies-who-lunch aesthetic puts a new spin on things. Traditional wine-drinking culture often falls into two categories: technical tasting or casual sipping. But blending it with afternoon tea feels delightfully unique, like the charm of “Bridgerton” and its spinoff, “Queen Charlotte.”

Unsurprisingly, the garden has embraced the show, hosting its own “Bridgerton Brunch.” But charming style aside, much of The Wine Garden’s success can be attributed to its co-founders. The chemistry of the mother-daughter team radiates from each event they host and can only be described as genuine. It’s clear that their business is a labor of love and stems from not just a passion for wine and Black culture but also their deep bond.

Their vision was to shake up wine culture with style, and they’ve done just that. Sticking to their theme with lavish gowns, floral arrangements, signature cocktails, and tasty tea fare, The Wine Garden is serving up much more than drinks. It’s the intersection of culture and Black excellence right in the heart of Philadelphia.
