Dawn Staley is a national treasure and now a three-time National Championship winner. Growing up in Philadelphia, Dawn Staley attended Dobbins Tech High School, where she was named the national high school player of the year. After high school, Dawn Staley went on to play basketball for the University of Virginia, leading her team to four NCAA tournaments, three Final Fours and a national championship. She then went on to play basketball overseas before starting her journey in the WNBA.
Now, as the head Women’s Basketball coach for the University of South Carolina, Dawn Staley is leading the charge in college basketball for women. Staley has been coaching the Gamecocks since 2008, holding the national championship title three times. In their most recent national championship title, which they won in April of this year, the Gamecock girls faced Iowa in an 87-75 score. What made this accomplishment even more special was the fact that the Gamecocks started the season with a new starting five. Not only was every outlet reporting on the girls’ win, but everyone’s entire social media feeds consisted of Gamecock colors (garnet and black), pictures of the team and the infamous picture of Dawn Staley smiling as confetti cascades all around her.
Her Basketball Journey
Coming from Philadelphia to Virginia to the WNBA and now South Carolina, Dawn Staley has lived all over the place. Playing basketball abroad after college, Staley briefly lived in France, Italy, Brazil and Spain before joining the WNBA. She played for multiple WNBA teams including the Houston Comets and Charlotte Sting before returning to Philadelphia as a coach for Temple University. She coached at Temple for eight years, leaving with the best overall record and making her mark on the WBB program at the university.
So we know that Dawn Staley has lived and been any and everywhere. From trips to Paris to flying to New York City to support Kamilla Cardoso and the other women in the WNBA draft, to recently being in Disney World, it’s clear that Dawn does not have the same 24 hours in a day as the rest of us. With her traveling so much both in the on and off-season, along with attending so many local events at the University of South Carolina, where exactly does Dawn Staley live? Let’s break down where the amazing Coach Staley lives.
Where Does Dawn Staley Live?
As the head coach for the University of South Carolina, Dawn Staley is currently living in Columbia, South Carolina. Not only does the campus adore and love Staley, but the state of South Carolina respects and admires her too. So much so that Dawn Staley is getting her very own statue in Downtown Columbia, near the UofSC campus. Images of the bronze statue were revealed a few months ago.
While she was born in Philadelphia, Staley was no stranger to South Carolina before moving there. Her roots are actually from there, as both of her parents are from Orangeburg, South Carolina.
Planting Her Roots In South Carolina
While we don’t know much about the details of Dawn Staley’s house, we do know that she lives just a short drive from campus in West Columbia. Known for its coffee shops, breweries, restaurants and shopping, West Columbia is an incredibly nice area with a lot to do and it’s perfect for families, young adults and students. In 2021, the city of West Columbia honored Dawn Staley and her hard work by giving her a key to the city. “I’m a new resident in West Columbia, and if this is the way they welcome you, I feel like I’m going to be here a long time. I get the chance to meet new people, enjoy the river and the Riverwalk. I think I have seriously prolonged my life because of being around this environment,” Staley said at the ceremony.
In an interview with GQ in 2021, Dawn talks all things family and basketball, showing off her home in Columbia, along with her office at the South Carolina athletic complex. The coach takes pride in her home, which she built from scratch. Featuring an elevator, waterfalls by the pool, marble and portraits of her hometown in Philly, it’s the perfect space for Staley and her dog, Champ.
Before making her way over to West Columbia, Staley lived in East Columbia in a 5 bed, 5 bath home. The 5,361 square-foot property featured granite countertops throughout, a media room, a three-car garage and a pool. The home was sold for $885,000.
South Carolina is her home, but there’s a piece of Dawn Staley in Philly too. A part of the street where she spent her childhood was named the “Dawn Staley Lane” in 2017.
