July 10, 2023 at 10:08 PM PST

When doing laundry, most of us tend to overlook a very important part of our home’s hygiene: cleaning your laundry hamper. Majority of the time we’re fixated on washing and folding our garments that we forget to clean to hampers that hold our dirty clothing. Laundry hampers can accumulate dirt, odor-causing bacteria, and if not properly cleaned — mold or mildew. Cleaning your laundry hampers helps keep your clothing fresh and ensures a hygienic home environment.

Why You Should Regularly Clean Your Laundry Hampers

Removes Odors and Bacteria

Due to dirty clothes piling up and dampness, hampers can develop an unpleasant odor. Bacteria stemming from soiled clothing can thrive in this environment. Cleaning your hampers at least once a month will help to eliminate odors and the growth of bacteria.

Prevents Mold and Mildew

Leaving damp or wet clothing in your laundry hamper can result in mold and mildew. These fungi can damage your garments and create health risks for those with allergies or respiratory issues. Avoid these risks by regularly cleaning your hamper.

Maintains a Clean Laundry Area

Without regular cleaning, your laundry hamper can accumulate dust, lint, and dirt. This leads to an unsightly and unhygienic laundry area. Regularly clean your hampers to maintain a clean, aesthetically pleasing space.

How To Clean Various Types of Laundry Hampers

Plastic Hampers

These are one of the easiest types of laundry hampers to clean. Start by emptying the hamper and removing any removable liners. Wash the liner separately. Clean the plastic hamper with warm, soapy water or a mild detergent. Scrub the interior and exterior of the hamper with a sponge or cloth. Rinse thoroughly with water and allow the hamper to air dry.

Wicker or Rattan Hampers

Wicker and rattan hampers require a soft touch to avoid damaging the material. Remove any fabric liners or bags and wash them separately. Use a soft brush or cloth dipped in mild soap and water and gently rub the surface. Make sure to not saturate the material. Towel dry the wicker or rattan hamper to remove excess moisture. Make sure that the hamper is completely air-dried before placing the liner or bag back inside.

Canvas or Fabric Hampers

These hampers are convenient to clean, as they can be thrown in the washing machine. Empty the hamper to remove any liners or bags. If it is machine washable, wash it according to the instructions on the label. Spot-clean the hamper with a gentle fabric cleaner or mild detergent if there are any stains. Allow the hamper to air dry.

Metal or Wire Hampers

These durable hampers are usually resistant to stains and odors. When cleaning, remove any liners or bags and wash them separately. Use a sponge or cloth soaked in warm soapy water to clean the metal or wire hamper. Pay special attention to any stubborn stains or dirt. Make sure to dry the surface thoroughly to prevent rusting. You can use a metal cleaner or polish to maintain a shiny surface.
