Here's Why We Should Incorporate The Danish Concept Of Hygge Into Our Home Design

We can all learn a thing or two about how other countries incorporate their culture into home design. In recent years, millennials have been experiencing extreme burnout as a result of the hustler mindset we embody on our quest to be what society deems as successful. Many of us are looking for ways to slow down, rest and take time to enjoy life. The Danish have seemed to master the concept of slowing down through their way of life known as hygge.

Pronounced “hoo-guh,” hygge is the art of embracing coziness. It’s all about creating and living in a comfortable atmosphere that you can call home. This can look like using soft lighting in your home, comfortable furniture, and warm textures. Although hygge is associated with colder weather and the holiday season, it can be embraced and enjoyed all year.

Why we should incorporate the Danish way of living in our home design

Hygge not only encourages us to slow down and enjoy the present moment we’re in but also teaches us to find joy in everyday moments. Living in a world that is always on the go, it can be hard to appreciate the simple moments in life. Practicing hygge at home can look like sitting at your breakfast nook in the morning with your cup of coffee and savoring the taste of your warm drink without checking emails or social media. Curate a space that lets you ease into your day and not feel rushed to start working immediately.

Being in a space that feels like a sanctuary helps with feelings of depression and anxiety, especially during the winter.

How can we incorporate hygge in our home design?

There are a few ways we can incorporate hygge into our home design. The first thing to do is to focus on curating an environment that is warm and inviting. Adding warm lighting, candles, and soft lamps into your space will create that look. Playing with soft and plush textures with pillows and blankets is another way to design a hygge home successfully.

Focus on natural materials like wood and wool to create a space with warmth and comfort. Pops of green with plants also add a relaxing element. If you want to decorate your bedroom to embody hygge, a wooden bed with plush white or neutral sheets, a blanket against a lime wash wall, and a beautiful plant is an excellent start.

Host your loved ones

Another major part of hygge is to spend time with your loved ones. The Danish believe that life should be enjoyed by spending quality time with your friends and family. Building a community of like-minded people is also great for your overall wellness. Create a space in your home specifically for socializing. This could be a dining area with a large table and comfortable seating or a room with cozy couches that your guests won’t want to leave.

This Danish concept is one that we should embrace while on a journey to living our softest lives. Slowly incorporating hygge into your home will work wonders for your mental and emotional well-being.
