Recent news of home decor and furniture retailer At Home closing multiple locations is making waves across the South. While it may not have the name recognition of stores like Kirkland’s or HomeGoods, At Home held just as much value for many Southern shoppers. Headquartered in Texas, the retailer operated 40 stores in the state and 262 nationwide. Despite that strong presence, At Home is now closing 26 stores permanently after filing for bankruptcy.
The brand officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday, June 16, citing a decline in customer demand. But that wasn’t the only factor. Newly implemented tariffs added financial strain, prompting the company to explore a full restructuring. At Home is not alone in this: retailers across the country—including Joann Fabrics, Kohl’s, and JCPenney—are also making strategic adjustments as they navigate shifting consumer behavior and rising operational costs.
For At Home, the solution has come in the form of closing its most underperforming stores. Fortunately for shoppers, closures won’t begin until September 2025, giving customers a few more months to browse and shop in person. Like HomeGoods or Costco, At Home has become a go-to destination for affordable furniture and stylish home decor. A walk through the store typically reveals a wide range of items, from accent chairs and wall art to lamps, bakeware, linens, storage solutions, and more.
Though headquartered in Dallas, the retailer expanded into major metro areas in California and New York, as well as suburban towns throughout the South. Still, popularity alone wasn’t enough to offset the impact of rising interest rates and inflation. According to court documents, the financial pressures were especially intense for brick-and-mortar locations, ultimately pushing the company to file for bankruptcy.
While only 26 of its 282 stores will be closing, filing for Chapter 11 marks a major shift. In a recent news release, At Home confirmed that ownership will transfer to investment firms based in New York City and San Francisco as part of its restructuring. The company’s online shop will remain operational, allowing customers to continue purchasing products digitally.
Store closures are scheduled to occur across the U.S., but most of At Home’s original Texas locations will remain open.
