While Atlanta, often referred to as the “Black Mecca,” is a prime destination for aspiring homeowners and Black families, Raleigh, North Carolina made the top of That Sister’s list.

Raleigh, North Carolina, is the leading city for Black families because it has a rich Black history and culture. The cost of living also is low, which makes it an attractive place for new homeowners. Residents enjoy the mild winters and long summers. They also enjoy the convenient commutes around town. Raleigh has a booming job market, which is encouraging for new homeowners and Black families.

Here are the top cities in the South that made the list:

  • San Antonio, Texas
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Richmond, Virginia
  • Dallas, Texas

Midwest, East Coast and West Coast Cities

Although southern cities make up a good portion of the list, there are coastal and midwestern cities that also are attracting more Black families.

  • Lansing, Michigan
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Washington, D.C.

The midwestern cities are attractive to Black entrepreneurs who have small businesses. Seattle seems to be a preferred option for west coast living as opposed to California for Black home seekers. While Washington, D.C. has a higher cost of living, it’s also rich in Black culture.
