Outfitting your home with a new DIY project is the ultimate glow-up. While small home hacks are a quick way to add some style to your space, a DIY project can give your home a renovated and designer feel. Timing is everything when it comes to these kinds of projects, and seeing the potential to transform basic into fabulous is key. That’s exactly what happened when creator Joel Moore-Hagan (@moorehisstyle) tackled the tiny doorway in between his kitchen and laundry room. Instead of opting for something boring, his DIY sliding door brings style and innovation to the area.

Replacing a door is one of the easier projects for homeowners. It requires little knowledge and only a handful of items to complete. Doors of all sorts and hinges are easy to find at Home Depot. But for Moore-Hagan, the empty doorway served as a way to get creative and bring his love of art into a unique space. A sliding door in the kitchen isn’t new. In fact, the idea is common with modern farmhouse homes. Still, Moore-Hagan’s approach is fresh and stylish. Seeing that the frame was too narrow for a traditional door or curtain closure, he used a large painting by New Mexican artist Alexandra Peacher to create a sliding door.
@moorehisstyle We took the kitchen door off the hinges and replaced it with artwork that we mounted to a drawer slide. This was already such a awkward/tight place to have a door which leads into our laundry room but now that it slides it def frees up some space. inspired by my girl @Rachel Martino who hid her washer/dryer behind a sliding custom mirror Art by @Alexandra Peacher #homedesign #diy #homedecor #hometips #homehacks #kitchendesign
Why It Worked
Narrow doorways can be awkward to navigate and even more challenging to style. Small-sized doors don’t have the same commanding appeal. Cloth or curtain closures are another option, but can look outdated in a modern kitchen. But a sliding door that swings past the sides of the frame frees up space and keeps the area from looking cramped. The design of the painting also adds a dose of style to their eclectic kitchen. Styling a doorway inside the kitchen isn’t easy, as they usually lead to less-used rooms. In the case of Moore-Hagan’s home, the laundry room was in a less-than-ideal area. The decision to use the painting as the door concealed the entryway, keeping it out of sight and adding to the kitchen’s design.
How He Did It
Despite looking complex, this DIY project came together easily. Like a traditional door, it required just a few tools and hardware to get the job done. After removing the original door from its hinges, they added drawer slides to the top and base of the wall and mounted the artwork. With one swift motion, the door slides from one side to the other, continuously displaying the painting.
Kitchens, pantries, and laundry rooms aren’t often rooms where you’d find great artwork. But why should that deter you from bringing beauty into the area? This fabulous swap is an easy DIY that will change your mind for the better.
