You know that feeling when you wake up on a winter morning and everything outside looks magical? The sun sparkles on the frost, and for a moment, you’re ready to star in your own cozy winter montage. But as soon as you approach the window, reality hits with an icy draft, snapping you back to the cold, hard truth. If this sounds familiar, it’s time to draft-proof those windows.
And if you’re like me, living in an older building with “character” (aka questionable insulation), you know exactly what I’m talking about. Nothing ruins that main-character moment quite like chattering teeth! Not even a hot cup of coffee, tea, or a cozy-spirited beverage could help warm you back to life because the weather outside has taken it all away from you.
Looking to keep your home cozy and draft-free during the cold season? We’ve rounded up a few essential strategies to seal your windows and secure all potential entry points against chilly air.
Keep reading on for more.
How to Draft-Proof Your Windows

Install Weatherstripping
Apply adhesive-backed foam tape or rubber weatherstripping around window frames to seal air leaks. Make sure to clean the surface thoroughly before application and press firmly to ensure proper adhesion.
Use Window Film Kits
Apply clear plastic shrink film to create an insulating air barrier. Start by attaching double-sided tape around the window frame, carefully apply the plastic film, and use a hair dryer to shrink and tighten the film for a crystal-clear barrier.
Add Thermal Curtains
Install heavy-duty curtains designed to block cold air. Mount curtain rods a few inches above windows and ensure curtains extend beyond window frames on all sides. Layer multiple curtains for maximum insulation.
Apply Caulk
Seal visible gaps with weatherproof caulk. Choose silicone-based caulk for exterior use and acrylic latex for interior. Remove the old caulk first, clean it thoroughly, and apply the new caulk at a 45-degree angle for the best results.
Install Cellular Shades
Use honeycomb-style blinds that create insulating air pockets. Measure windows carefully for proper fit and consider double-cell shades for maximum efficiency.
