Elevating your home’s aesthetic is more than just splurging on high-end pieces—sometimes, it’s about the subtlety and the art of omission. Certain decor can take away from your home’s value and instead make it look cheap. Daniel Ufland, co-founder of furniture marketplace Flitch, shares the three things you should avoid to make your home look expensive.
“The difference between a cheap-looking home and a luxurious one often lies in the details,” Ufland reveals.
Artwork with Quotes and Sayings
While personalization makes a house feel like a home, excessive use of quote-based artwork can become cliché. “These pieces can quickly become outdated and may not resonate with everyone’s taste, detracting from the space’s overall aesthetic,” shares Ufland.
Instead, he suggests curating a more thoughtful collection of paintings, photographs, sculptures, and mixed media that reflects your personal style. “Invest in original artwork from local artists or unique prints from reputable sources to add character and individuality to your space,” says Ufland.
Lack of Design Cohesion
A home that feels disjointed can often feel cheap. Mismatched styles, clashing color schemes, and decor that don’t flow well together should be avoided. Ufland advises choosing an overall theme or aesthetic that reflects your personal design style and sticking to it when shopping for furniture, decor, and paint colors. “Consider creating a mood board or design plan to ensure all elements work harmoniously.” Says Ufland. “Invest in key pieces that tie the design scheme together, such as area rugs, throw pillows, and artwork that complement the overall theme.”
Too Many Artificial Plants
While they require less maintenance, having too many artificial plants can make a space feel cheap. There’s just something about live plants that brings a sense of vitality to a space.
Ufland advises to “incorporate a variety of live plants throughout your home to add natural beauty and purify the air.” When choosing specific plants, he says to “choose low-maintenance plants that thrive indoors, such as pothos, snake plants, and succulents.”
If you do prefer artificial plants, he suggests choosing high-quality, realistic ones and using them sparingly.
