If you’ve ever wondered how to elevate your home, you’re not alone. From renovations and demos to dramatic before-and-afters, there are countless ways to transform your space. But before tearing things down, it’s worth asking: could your decor be making your home look less than luxe?
According to interior designer and content creator Jenna Morrow (@jennadmorrow), certain decor choices might be the reason your home looks cheap.
Decorating and furnishing a home can be expensive, and budget finds from places like HomeGoods or Marshalls can help keep costs down. But while affordable pieces have their place, there are a few areas where it pays to invest. Keep reading for the decor items Jenna says to avoid if you want your home to look more refined and elevated.
@jennadmorrow Part 1 of things that are making your home look cheap. First up: artificial plants. #interiordesigner #blackinteriordesigner
Lackluster Faux Plants
While faux greenery has its benefits, such as easy maintenance and longevity, it needs to appear as realistic as possible. In the first installment of her series, Jenna points out that a stiffer style with sharp leaves will give you the opposite effect. When searching for a new faux plant to add to your space, she recommends investing in an option with loose leaves to deliver a lifelike look.
@jennadmorrow I’m back with part 2 of things you’re doing that are making your home look cheap and this time I’m talking about grommet curtains. Watch to see what you should buy instead. #interiordesigner #blackinteriordesigner
Grommet Style Curtains
Windows are often the focal point of a room, and your drapery choices can play a big part in how they’re showcased. Grommet-style curtains with large rings are great for movement and easy to install. However, as Jenna points out, there are other styles that can elevate the look and feel of the room. Opting for a curtain with a rod pocket delivers a sleek look that elongates the room and gives it a more polished appearance from every angle.
@jennadmorrow Here’s my last video in this series of things that are making your home look cheap. Who else knows someone with those decals in their home? 👀
Wall Decals
In her third and final video in the series, Jenna speaks on wall decals. Once beloved for their uplifting quotes and charm, these kinds of decals feel dated compared to the many different decor elements available today. That doesn’t mean you can’t still infuse your home with warmth. Instead of hanging a stylized quote on your wall, she recommends using pictures of family, friends, or funny memories to tell your story. If you prefer art to photography, artwork can showcase your decor style much better than a quote on the wall.
