If you have allergies, you know there’s no magic bullet to eliminate allergens completely from your space. However, with some careful cleaning strategies, you can mitigate the symptoms and make your home feel like a refuge rather than an allergy trigger zone.
Tip #1: Opt for allergy-proof bedding.
Using allergen-proof covers on pillows, mattresses, and box springs can significantly reduce your exposure to dust mites, which are one of the common indoor allergens. Wash your bedding in hot water weekly to maintain an allergy-friendly bedroom.

Tip #2: Stay on top of dust.
Dusting and vacuuming your space regularly is vital. Opt for a vacuum that has a HEPA filter to trap smaller particles that other vacuums might re-circulate into the air. Remember to use a damp cloth when using surfaces to capture the dust rather than spread it around.
Tip #3: Keep pollen away.
During the dreaded pollen season, keep your windows closed and use air conditioning with a clean filter. Leave your shoes at the door and change your clothes after coming indoors to minimize the amount of pollen brought inside.

Tip #4: Control indoor humidity.
Maintain indoor humidity below 50% to keep mold growth and dust mites at bay. Use the exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, and consider adding a dehumidifier in damp areas like basements.
Tip #5: Filter the air.
A portable air purifier with a HEPA filter is great for reducing airborne allergens in specific rooms. Be sure to upgrade the air filters in your HVAC system to improve air quality throughout your home.

Tip #6: Reduce pet dander.
If you have pets, be sure to brush them regularly outdoors to reduce the amount of dander and hair around your home. Opt for leather or washable slipcovers to make managing dander easier.
