Wayfair Will Open It’s First Store Next Year: Here's What To Know

June 29, 2023 at 7:31 PM PST

Chicago residents are in luck — the city will welcome e-commerce home decor giant Wayfair in the spring of next year. As reported by NBC Chicago, the Wayfair store will be located in the Edens Plaza in Wilmette, Illinois. The location is approximately 20 miles from downtown Chicago. The announcement comes just two years after it was originally announced that the retailer wanted to explore the brick-and-mortar space.

Business of Home reported that Wayfair told the press, “You’ll be able to shop, explore, and be inspired like never before with huge immersive and interactive experiences across 19 departments, from furniture and decor to outdoor and home improvement. Plus, sip and snack while you shop with treats from our debut in-store restaurant!”

Just last month, the company opened a Joss & Main store in Oak Brook, another Chicago suburb. Wayfair is looking to make the Chicagoland area their first real attempt at being a physical home furnishing retail destination. During the pandemic, Wayfair soared in profits, while other retailers such as Bed, Bath and Beyond saw record-shattering losses.

Wayfair’s First Store: What To Expect

Wayfair’s Wilmette location will be the former Carson Pirie Scott department store spanning two stories and over 150,000 square feet of space.

While there aren’t many details of what the Wayfair store will offer, there is confirmation of a restaurant and a spokesperson confirmed that there will be “interactive experiences spanning 19 different departments,” according to NBC Chicago.

This isn’t the first time that Wayfair is testing the waters of a physical store. Years ago, the brand opened a test store outside of its Boston headquarters. Since then, the company has added a mix of smaller stores in different locations across the country.

Recently, Wayfair opened an 11,000-square-foot pop-up store in Texas. However, it’s slated to only be open for eight months.
