If you’re a baseball fan, the name David Ortiz likely needs no further introduction. The retired Red Sox champion and current ESPN sports analyst, famously nicknamed Big Papi, is widely regarded as one of the greatest designated hitters in the history of the MLB. For Boston natives, Papi has been hailed as a flagship player, after famously leading the team to their first World Series victory in nearly a century back in 2004. This win, which culminated in the Sox breaking the long-feared “Curse of the Bambino,” propelled the Dominican Republic native to local icon status, and even resulted in then-Governor Charlie Baker naming a bridge in Ortiz’s honor. The 2004 season was recently explored in a three-part Netflix documentary titled The Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox.
Since all eyes seem to be on David Ortiz at the moment, now seems like as good a time as any to take a look at what multiple championship rings and MVP honors buys in the housing market, especially now that the former first baseman has settled into his commentator role, which won’t require him to move around quite as much as he did during the busy Red Sox season. Though Big Papi’s current permanent address is not a matter of public record, we can get a look at his general taste and design choices by inspecting his former homes in Weston, Massachusetts and Miami, Florida, which have each sold for multi-million dollar sums in recent years. Without any further preamble, let’s load our bases, and see if Ortiz’s housing purchases count as a home run!
Exploring David Ortiz’s Weston, MA Home
During David Ortiz’s tenure with the Boston Red Sox, he and his wife Tiffany purchased an 8,100 square-foot home in Weston, Massachusetts, roughly 20 minutes away from Fenway Park. The estate, which rests on a 2.15 acre plot of land, offers six bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a welcoming open floor plan, perfect for hosting large events or staying in with the family. Those who venture beyond the gated driveway will see that the exterior of the house offers a rustic-style build, with a stone entryway that ushers guests into a large living space complete with tons of natural light fixtures, beautiful hardwood floors, and a stone fireplace. The stone walkway continues around the back of the home to reveal a secluded in-ground pool area, with a hot tub and 3 car garage flanking the rear side of the house.
Inside the Weston residence, Big Papi and his family boasted a fully custom-built kitchen with a breakfast nook, wood cabinets and a spacious walk-in pantry. The large dining area just around the corner from the kitchen offers off-white seating fixtures beside a solid oak table, while the living room and den provide a red accent wall for a splash of fresh, vibrant color. A luxurious grand staircase leads to the previously mentioned six bedrooms, where Papi lived from 2007 until he put the home on the market in 2019. The master bedroom contains a private bath, complete with a soaking tub and steam shower, which is perfect for nursing those wrist, elbow and shoulder injuries sustained by whooping the New York Yankees during post-season games.
Specialty Rooms and Additional Features
David Ortiz’s former Weston residence has a number of specialty rooms beyond what meets the eye. Thanks to a few sale listing photos, Red Sox fans are able to peep behind the curtain at the way the all-star athlete brings his team pride into his home. The rustic abode touts numerous rooms with Red Sox memorabilia, including a Green Monster-themed space complete with a wall-mounted scoreboard. Downstairs from the main floor there is a custom-built home theater with leather reclining chairs, right next to a conveniently placed staff-style kitchen with a gorgeous red brick facade. The home theater opens up to a small but comprehensive in-home gym, perfect for banging out a few exercises while catching the latest MLB highlights on the green projector screen.
Though Big Papi listed the home for sale in 2019, just a few short years after his retirement from the Sox, he didn’t ultimately sell the lot until 2021. At that time, a property developer is said to have purchased the home for $3.5 million. Though it seems likely that the new owners will make certain adjustments to fall in line with their own personal taste, it’s clear that the identity of Boston pride is baked into the fabric of the building.
Unpacking Ortiz’s Opulent Miami Mansion
In 2017, David Ortiz and his family moved to the Pinecrest neighborhood of Miami, Florida. The suburb, which is just a brief drive from the city’s bustling downtown area, offers some privacy due to the lush greenery which surrounds the property. Even with all this greenery, Papi’s Miami abode sticks out like a jewel in a crown, since the massive 10,000 square-foot home comes packed with some truly upscale amenities. For starters, the front walkway into the property sees visitors crossing a stone-tile threshold between two flowing water fixtures. Around back, the Miami residence touts an in-ground swimming pool, alongside a full spa, water fountain, and well-stocked outdoor kitchen space. When Ortiz isn’t too busy jet-setting back and forth to his home nation of the Dominican Republic, he can kick back and hit up the grill while his kids await their meals in the poolside gazebo.
Much like his Weston home, David Ortiz’s Miami abode comes complete with high ceilings inside, tons of natural light and an open concept that offers plenty of breathing room. If and when Ortiz and company ever get tired of char-grilled cookouts, their interior kitchen greets them with a stunning white marble backsplash, right across from their sprawling living room area, which appears to be stocked with tons of seating options to entertain a myriad of guests. The home also touts five large bedrooms and eight bathrooms, as well as a massive home theater with a fully stocked bar. The master bedroom offers an incredible view of the estate with wall-to-wall windows, as well as a television set that comes down from the ceiling. A number of other bedrooms offer a loft-style bi-level space, complete with reading nooks and plenty of options for personalization.
After living in the Miami home for a few years, David Ortiz ultimately decided it was time to downsize in 2023, following the news that he and his wife would be separating. Luckily, Papi’s real estate investment in Florida paid off quite well, as the lavish mansion ultimately sold for the sky-high price of $10.5 million. The sale made history as the most expensive home purchase in the area of all time, according to reps from One Sotheby’s International Realty. Though the buyer has chosen to remain anonymous, realtors have revealed that the proud new homeowner is a massive baseball fan who hails from the city of Boston. This may help to explain why the buyer was so dead-set on purchasing Big Papi’s opulent stomping grounds, even at the multi-million dollar asking price.
For now, there’s no public information on where David Ortiz plans to live full time in 2024 and beyond. Needless to say, he can certainly afford to go anywhere he desires for the foreseeable future. Given his choice to downsize however, it seems clear that he’ll likely go with something a bit more modest for his next major real estate purchase. Still, the Red Sox champion seems to have a real knack for making prudent real estate choices, so maybe he’ll start snatching and flipping multiple properties next. Considering all the lucrative financial avenues Big Papi has invested in thus far, it just seems like the logical next step.
