Americans take a lot of pride in their homes. Because the home is like a reflection of our own personal style, it can feel really good to receive a compliment (or two) on how well you’ve decorated or maintained your living space. According to a recent survey conducted by OnePoll for AirWick, sometimes nothing is better than being acknowledged for your hard work in caring for your space, and there are a few compliments in particular that really seal the deal. Here are the top compliments that Americans like to hear about their homes, as well as a few tips on how you might be able to receive them.
It smells good in here.
When it comes to creating the perfect ambiance for your place, people turn to aromatherapy to set the mood. This includes everything from plugging in an air freshener to letting a candle burn.
In fact, a whopping 43 percent of participants agree that one of the best compliments they can receive about their home is, “Your home smells so good!”
55 percent said the scent of a home is even more important than how it looks. And who can blame them? Especially given that just under half (44 percent) of participants admitted to judging someone based on how their home smells.
But beyond that, this isn’t just about flexing on visitors. In fact, according to the study, when their home is clean and smells great, 64 percent of respondents claim to be more relaxed, 57 percent claim to be more peaceful, and another 57 percent, refreshed. This aligns with other research studies that reveal the correlation between aromatherapy and positive mental health.
But which scent do Americans prefer most? According to the study, here are the top scents that made the cut:
- Fresh laundry or linen
- Ocean breeze
- Lavender
- Vanilla
- Lemon or citrus
So the next time you have visitors over, be sure to snag a couple of the most popular fragrances to create a welcoming vibe that (mostly) anyone can appreciate.
Your place is such a vibe.
Beyond loving the compliment that their space smells nice, 37 percent of participants noted that they love hearing that their home has a good vibe. Curating the perfect vibe for your home when a loved one stops by is a must.
And fortunately, it’s pretty easy to do with music, candles and a little time spent curating the perfect ambiance.
Your home is so fresh and so clean.
52 percent of people surveyed said they love receiving compliments about their home when it looks clean. So, it’s no wonder cleaning is such a big part of preparing for visitors. Luckily, you don’t have to run around anxiously trying to tidy up before they arrive. If you keep your place clean for the most part, you won’t have to clean nearly as much to prepare for your loved ones.
For help getting started, here some tips for readying your home for visitors without the extra hassle:
- Empty out all garbage cans and recycle bins
- Wipe down your surfaces
- Vacuum or sweep the floors
- Fluff up the couch pillows and fold any blankets for a cozier look
- Light a few candles or use scented plug-ins to keep your space smelling fresh
After you’ve done this, you should be ready for guests. And of course, when that happens, you can expect the compliments to just roll in.
