For too long, the tequila industry has been dominated by white brand owners with little to no recognition of Black liquor companies and mixologists. With the space widely attributed to those outside of the Black community, Black individuals involved in the industry have undergone a tremendous fight to be just seen, heard, and appreciated within and outside of the space. As a result, there has been a growing emergence in recent years of Black-owned tequila brands making their individual marks within the alcohol industry.
Whether it’s serving robust Reposado tequila to Blanco tequila, these Black-owned brands not only specialize in offering high-quality tequilas, but are also bringing a unique perspective to how we view alcohol while celebrating the rich culture of Mexico, where tequila originates. By creating their own tequila labels, these black-owned entrepreneurs are breaking barriers, providing opportunities within the industry, and adding to the spectrum of proper representation.
And though Juneteenth is long behind us, it’s never too late to support Black-owned brands that are making a difference, which is why we’ve compiled a list of tequila brands to add to your bar cart this season so you won’t have to.
Lobos 1707
Co-founded by the legendary ball player Lebron James, Lobos 1707 takes its name from the Spanish word for “wolves.” Marking the birth of the oldest known wolf in the Iberian Peninsula, the name reflects all of the qualities that make a wolf one of the strongest and fiercest animals; such as strength, resilience, and devotion to family. The brand sets itself apart from other tequila brands as its main focus is creating handcrafted tequilas using Mexican traditions and agave-based spirits.
Working closely with a master distiller and a team of experts to create robust tequila options for customers, Lobos offers premium options from Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo. The brand’s commitment to providing premium high-quality tequila is unparalleled, and it also dips its hat into charitable social impact, community engagement, and social justice causes.
Deleón
Deleón is a one-of-a-kind tequila brand that’s gathered significant attention. Founded by Sean “Diddy” Combs, Deleón intertwines luxury craftsmanship with cultural influence. By using hand-selected agave plants for distillation, the brand offers a wide range of robust tequilas that cater to different taste palettes. A few flavor options include Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and Extra Añejo, which are each curated to add a flavorful palette with every sip.
Deleón has a strong connection to Mexican heritage and strives to preserve its traditions through the art of tequila and the liquor industry.
Revel
Founded by Micah McFarlane, an entrepreneur and tequila enthusiast, Revel is rivaling the tequila industry. The brand represents a new and fresh perspective on the tequila world by challenging conventional norms with unique perspectives. What makes Revel so unique is that it has a commitment to authenticity and sustainability, sourcing ingredients from agave plants in a single estate in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico.
The tequila powerhouse ensures the highest quality and consistency in its tequilas and takes pride in promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable farming practices. With a dedication to environmental preservation, Revel is changing how people view and in turn experience tequila with top-tier flavor refinement, traditional production methods, slow-roasting agave hearts, and copper pot distilling for a smooth and refined finish.
Teremana
Founded by none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Teremana has made a significant wave in the alcohol industry with a focus on health-conscious and sustainable tequilas. Using mature, hand-selected agave plants grown in Jalisco Mexico, the brand is renowned for serving the finest tequilas with rich and complex flavor profiles.
Teremana has a keen focus on health as all tequilas are crafted with low sugar and calories so customers can enjoy tequila as part of a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle.
Cincoro
Rooted in Mexican tradition, Cincoro tequila represents the artisanal art of tequila—production with meticulous attention to detail. The brand was founded by five NBA owners including Micheal Jordan, and focuses on crafting top-shelf premium liquor options to customers all over the world. The brand’s name, Cincoro, derives from African roots and pays homage to Yoruba, a West African language, meaning “together we prosper.”
In addition to developing delicious tequila options, Cincoro engages in community support initiatives. From partnering with local artisans to supporting education programs, Cincoro’s mission is to make a positive impact while uplifting communities near and far.
