We Tried Blueland's Eco-Friendly Household Products, and It Changed the Way We Clean

May 29, 2023 at 5:00 PM PST

There’s nothing quite like the little joys of sunlight streaming through spotless windows, immaculate bathrooms, laundry folded and neatly tucked away, and crumb-free countertops. But let’s be honest — when it comes to the process of getting there, scrubbing, washing and disinfecting isn’t exactly the most thrilling activity on our nearly endless to-do lists.

And then there are the products. Despite a sea of options to choose from on the shelves, cleaning products seem to lack innovation. In fact, they often fall into one of two categories: harsh, dangerous chemicals that assault the senses but come with the deep clean we crave, or non-toxic varieties that are just … okay.

Blueland, on the other hand, changes everything. They’re a line of eco-friendly cleaning and household products that get the job done, and done well. The best part? They eliminate single-use plastic. Buy the bottles and containers once, then refill with their clean, sustainable and award-winning product. Never pay for water or wasteful packaging again.

They sent over some products for us to try out, and let’s just say, it’s a game-changer for not only keeping our households clean, but the planet, too.

What’s Included in the Box

Blueland offers a complete set of cleaning products, and we received the Clean Suite Kit, which includes three 24-ounce spray bottles for multi-purpose, glass and bathroom cleaning, a 9-ounce glass foaming hand soap bottle, a 16-ounce silicon container for powdered dish soap, a steel tin for 60 dishwasher tablets, and a steel tin for 60 laundry detergent tablets. Each comes with a refill of product to get you started.

You can also purchase each item individually if you wanted to see how you like a particular product, but this set is the move if you want to revamp your cleaning game — and get the best bang for your buck, but we’ll get to that in a bit.

The first thing we noticed: It’s pretty. We hadn’t even used the products yet, but as a millennial crowd that naturally gravitates towards aesthetic packaging (we see you, skincare) it’s nice to see Blueland read the room and start things off with a nice visual impression.

Setting Up the Products

Setting up is about as simple as it gets. Fill the dishwasher, laundry and dish soap with their labeled tablets/powders and you’re good to go. For the foaming hand soap, multi-purpose, bathroom and glass cleaners, just fill the bottles up to the line with warm water, drop in the tablet and twist on the nozzle. The tablets dissolve in around two minutes, and the cleaning setup is complete.

Materials

We’re already fans of the packaging, but it’s clear these products really live up to their eco-friendly promise. They’re made with plant-based and planet-friendly ingredients free of VOCs, phthalates, chlorine, bleach, or parabens. Everything is sleek, minimal and colorful. We can confidently say they’ve earned a #shelfie.

Performance

We love a nice-looking product, but what really matters is if it actually works. It’s pretty black-or-white when it comes to cleaning products, and everything served its purpose. Streak-free mirrors? Check. Sparkling countertops? Check. Fresh bathroom, laundry and immaculate dishes? Check, check and check.

There was no strong chemical smell, or really any smell at all besides a light, fresh scent. Everything was just as if the stain, spill or spot never happened. The only product that wasn’t an immediate favorite was the powdered dish soap. It did a thorough cleaning that foamed up on a wet sponge and removed grease with ease, but the powder just took some getting used to if your go-to is liquid dish soap.

Price Comparison

The entire Clean Suite Starter Kit runs for $89 for a one-time purchase, and $80 if you opt for their subscription, which sends you five hand soap tablets, three multi-surface tablets, three bathroom tablets, two glass and mirror tablets, one dish soap pouch, 60 dishwasher tablets and 60 laundry tablet every three months.

After the starter kit, with a subscription, you’re essentially paying less than $27 a month for the entire lineup of cleaning products — the most cost-effective offer. If you wanted to purchase individual products, the price is similar to what you’d pay for premium brands. A 61-count container of Tide Pods costs between $20-$26, while a 60-tablet Blueland laundry refill pack costs $21.

However, a 32.7 oz bottle of Dawn Platinum dish soap costs around $5-$7, while the 16-ounce Blueland dish soap powder — although ultra-concentrated and likely to last much longer — runs $12 a pouch. Essentially, check out the products that align with your cleaning needs and decide what best fits your household. Otherwise, the subscription is a solid route.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Blueland household cleaning products stack up as an effective, affordable, and eco-friendly aesthetic delight. They came at the perfect time when these types of products needed some ingenuity, thoughtfulness and new life breathed into them.

Blueland not only passes the vibe check, but it also turns the feet-dragging obligation of cleaning into a ritualistic lifestyle that makes you feel good knowing you’re reducing your carbon footprint.
