Your carpet goes through a lot. It sees foot traffic, spills, scuffs, claws and dirty paws. It’s meant to be enduring, but even the lowest-pile, heavy-duty varieties require care and attention. While accidents are bound to happen, there are certain actions best avoided when you have carpet flooring. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep this significant area of your home in pristine condition.

1. Don’t: Neglect Regular Vacuuming

Just as you wouldn’t skip brushing your teeth, neglecting this chore is a no-go. Dust, dirt, and debris are stealthy invaders that can settle deep into carpet fibers, causing premature wear and tear. Make it a habit to vacuum at least once a week, paying extra attention to high-traffic areas and beneath furniture where dust bunnies love to congregate.

2. Don’t: Resort to Abrasive Scrubbing

Stubborn stains may tempt you to channel your inner rage-cleaning beast and vigorously scrub away. However, abrasive scrubbing can do more harm than good, damaging delicate carpet fibers and leaving behind unsightly patches. Instead, adopt a gentle approach by blotting the stain with a clean cloth and a mild detergent solution. Patience is key—allow the cleaning solution to work its magic without resorting to brute force.

3. Don’t Drag Heavy Furniture

Moving heavy furniture across carpeted floors may seem like a straightforward task, but it can wreak havoc on your carpet. Dragging heavy furniture can cause irreversible damage, stretching and tearing carpet fibers in the process. Whenever possible, enlist the help of friends or get a pack of furniture sliders to glide heavy pieces across the floor with ease. Your carpet will thank you for it.

4. Do: Avoid Excessive Moisture

Carpet and excessive moisture are a lethal combination. Whether it’s a spilled drink or a pet-related mishap, resist the urge to drench the affected area with water. Over-saturation can lead to mold and mildew growth, not to mention unpleasant odors that linger long after the spill has been cleaned up. Instead, opt for a targeted approach, blotting away moisture with a clean towel and using a fan to expedite drying.

5. Do: Keep Chemical Cleaners at Bay

When faced with a stubborn stain, it’s tempting to reach for the nearest chemical cleaner. However, many commercial cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can damage carpet fibers and leave behind a toxic residue. Instead, go for eco-friendly alternatives or create your own DIY cleaning solutions using household staples like vinegar and baking soda. This probably should go without saying, but under no circumstance should you ever, ever use bleach. In addition to the destructive chemicals, it can leave your carpet discolored and unsightly.

6. Do: Avoid Walking on it with Dirty Feet

While padding around barefoot may seem harmless, it’s a different game than surfaces like hardwood or tile. The natural oils and dirt present on bare feet can build up and leave stains over time, especially on lighter-colored carpets. It might feel a little extra to encourage family members and guests to wear slippers or socks to protect your carpet, but it will preserve its appearance in the long run.

7. Do: Steer Clear of Sun Exposure

While natural light can brighten up a room, prolonged exposure to sunlight can spell trouble for your carpet. UV rays have a knack for fading colors and weakening carpet fibers over time, leading to a dull and worn-out appearance. To protect your carpet from sun damage, consider getting curtains or blinds that can be drawn during the sunniest parts of the day.

8. Do: Embrace Annual Deep Cleaning

In addition to regular maintenance, you’ll want to give your carpet a thorough deep cleaning at least once a year. Over time, dirt and grime can accumulate deep within the carpet fibers, dulling their appearance and harboring allergens even with regular cleaning. A professional carpet cleaning service will help it feel like new, or you can DIY by renting a steam cleaner.
