Statement furniture is a staple in every home. Like a vintage handbag, heirloom earrings, or colorful accessories, they add to the room in a unique way and give it a bold new look. However, finding a standout piece on a budget can be difficult. More often than not, these items are costly and hard to find. Opting for the DIY version can make things easier and give you an impressive story to tell. That’s exactly what one creator did when she came across her dream cabinet on Pinterest. After seeing its $7,000 price tag, she decided a DIY statement cabinet project was the better choice.
As costs continue to rise, so does the interest in do-it-yourself decor. Not only does this route allow you to save money, but it also allows you to customize the piece to fit your needs and home. Best of all, most projects require little skill and thrive on creating designer-inspired pieces with a personal touch. For Bria, @littlemissbria on her social media platforms, DIY proved to be the perfect solution, bringing her vision to life and expanding on the original design for something far more intriguing.
Keep reading to discover how she completely transformed popular Ikea cabinets and made it into a statement piece of her own.

Start With The Basics
Whether you’re planning to remodel your kitchen or not, you’ve likely seen Ikea’s Ivar cabinets. Large and minimalist in design, they’ve become a go-to for popular pared-down aesthetics. Coincidentally, their bare design also makes the ideal canvas for DIY projects. With so many Ivar hacks floating around the internet, Bria decided it was the perfect blank slate for her project. The Ivar cabinets are constructed of untreated solid pine for durability and are specifically designed to be hacked. Per the superstore’s website, Ivar is made from “untreated solid pine, a durable natural material that can be painted, oiled, or stained according to preference.” Another great thing about these cabinets is their versatility. As Bria explains, she was initially inspired by a creator who used them to create a credenza. The shelves inside are also adaptable to suit different spacing needs, and the cabinets can be combined to create a customized storage system.
Take Advantage of Craft Stores
To create the gorgeous design, Bria headed to another money-saving outlet: the craft store. With simple wooden balls and wood glue, she made a cool and contemporary pattern that rivals high-end designs. To ensure that each of the wooden spheres was positioned uniformly, a simple ruler was used to measure the spaces between each sphere and row.
Once the design was complete and everything had dried, it was time to give the cabinets a luxurious look. Since Bria was going for a vintage style, she opted for double staining and added a gloss on top for shine.
Styling Matters
Though the original cabinet of Bria’s Pinterest board was half the size, her DIY version allowed her to get creative with styling. With adjustable shelves, she had much more space to include a full bar — think large liquor bottles, several types of glassware, cocktail shakers, and additional tools. The bottom of the cabinet is to hold other items and serve as extra storage in her home. The final result proved to be not just practical and budget-friendly but also made a stylish statement. It’s perfect for entertaining guests or having an intimate weekly dinner.
