Dr. Abhinav Singh (MD, FAASM), a respected authority in sleep medicine and Medical Review Expert at the Sleep Foundation, offers a critical perspective on the study’s findings. Despite the study indicating no negative effects of hitting the snooze button, Dr. Singh advises caution. He asserts, “It should not be interpreted as snoozing is fine. In my opinion, excessive snoozing may be due to chronic sleep deprivation, circadian rhythm disturbances, or medical or sleep disorders.”
The study, which involved subjects free of sleep-related ailments, suggests that a single snooze of 10-15 minutes can aid the waking process. Dr. Singh echoes this sentiment, having always allowed this brief snooze period for his patients. However, he raises concerns about repetitive snoozing exceeding 30 minutes, suggesting it warrants closer examination.
Dr. Singh explains that excessive snoozing can lead to interrupted sleep, potentially negating the benefits of added sleep time. He likens it to a plane circling a runway without landing—a metaphor for the inefficiency of excessively hitting the snooze button. “Essentially wasting fuel and not going anywhere,” he remarks.
Understanding the balance is crucial. While a short snooze can gently ease one out of sleep, prolonging this can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to feelings of grogginess and disorientation. It’s important to recognize the signs of excessive snoozing as a potential indicator of underlying sleep issues.
Dr. Singh, who also serves as the Medical Director of the Indiana Sleep Center and author of “Sleep to Heal,” emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of excessive snoozing. Whether it’s adjusting bedtime routines, seeking medical advice for sleep disorders, or modifying lifestyle choices, finding a sustainable sleep pattern is key to overall health and well-being.
While the snooze button may not be inherently harmful, its use requires a thoughtful approach. Moderation and awareness of one’s sleep needs and patterns are essential in reaping the benefits of those extra minutes of rest in the morning.
