Adding a good rug can add a certain “wow-factor” to your space by silently transforming it with a pop of color, a layer of depth, and of course the bonus benefit of giving you comfort underfoot. If you’ve ever rug-shopped before, you’ll know they come in all different shapes, sizes, materials, and even instructions for care. This rug guide gives you some pointers on what to look for and how to find the best ones for your space and lifestyle.

A Warm Welcome – The Entryway Rug

First impressions matter, and an entryway rug sets the tone for your home. A rectangular rug, ideally 3×5 feet, is a great way to welcome your guests—and you—red-carpet style. Vibrant colors and patterns could work well here, especially if your entryway is neutral or minimalist.

Materials for Entryway Rugs

  • Coir: Coir rugs are made from natural coconut fibers. They are especially durable and can withstand heavy foot traffic.
  • Polypropylene: Polypropylene rugs are synthetic, making them easy to clean and maintain. They come in a variety of patterns and colors.

Living Large – The Area Rug

When it comes to the living room, a bigger rug definitely tends to compliment the space. A large area rug, such as an 8×10 or 9×12 feet option, can anchor your furniture and create a cozy gathering spot. Make sure that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on the rug to achieve that harmonious look.

Materials for Area Rugs

  • Wool: Wool rugs are known for their softness and durability. They come in plenty of styles and are excellent choices for the living room.
  • Nylon: Nylon rugs are stain-resistant and easy to clean, making them a practical choice for high-traffic areas.

Dining in Style – The Dining Room Rug

Elevate your dining experience with the right rug. A dining room rug should be large enough to accommodate the table and chairs, leaving sufficient space for movement. A 7×10 or 8×10 feet rug is usually a great choice.

  • Jute: Jute rugs add a natural, textured element to your dining area. They are also easy to clean and maintain, especially in an area prone to spills!
  • Sisal: Sisal rugs are another natural fiber option, known for their durability and understated charm.

Bedroom Bliss – The Bedroom Rug

The rug you choose here can make your cozy retreat even more comfy. Unless you have an eclectic style, a more simple rug with maximum two or three colors and minimal color are likely to complement the space. For a queen-sized bed, a 6×9 feet rug is a solid standard size, and for a king-sized bed, you may be able to accomodate an 8×10 feet rug. Place it partially under the bed for a luxurious feel as you step out of bed in the morning.

Materials for Bedroom Rugs

  • Shag: People tend to poke fun at shag rugs, claiming they’re out-dated—myself included, here’s the evidence, but secretly, I love them. But they’re excellent for the bedroom because they are plush and soft for your feed, adding just the right amount or warmth and comfort when you set your feet down in the morning.
  • Faux Fur: Faux fur rugs are having a moment, and they do create a luxurious and cozy atmosphere, perfect for bedrooms.

Hallway Runners – The Stylish Strides

Hallways are often overlooked but can benefit from the charm of a well-placed runner. These long, narrow rugs add a twist of style while protecting your floors. Choose a runner that extends the length of your hallway for a cohesive look.

  • Cotton: Cotton runners are soft and easy to clean, making them a practical choice for hallways.
