We’re familiar with Beyoncé as one of the biggest vocal forces in the music industry and beyond, but before her rise to fame, the mother of three was just a young girl in Houston with huge dreams. She grew up in a two-story, three-bedroom three-bathroom home on Rosedale Street. That residence unfortunately caught fire on Christmas Day in 2023, but thankfully, the young family living there at the time made it out safely.
As she remained focused on achieving superstardom, Bey’s father Matthew Knowles quit his job to manage the girl group that would become Destiny’s Child. To cope with the huge financial loss, he and Tina Knowles sold their cars and moved into separate apartments as tensions in their marriage rose.
At the time, Beyoncé’s parents likely didn’t realize just how much their countless sacrifices would pay off. After growing up in a 3,000-square-foot home, she and her husband Jay-Z broke a record last year after acquiring a 30,000-square-foot compound in California that’s perfect for hosting family functions.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Record-Breaking California Compound
As Forbes notes, the astounding home Bey and Jay added to their collection last May was initially privately listed for $295M, making the $200M price tag they paid a serious steal. Even so, it’s still the most expensive home to ever be purchased in California history. Previously owned by soap opera legend and art collector Bill Bell Jr., the property spent over a decade and a half being renovated. The Young and the Restless creator enlisted Japanese architect Tadao Ando to turn his home into a modernist glass-and-concrete structure, which boasts beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.
Over 22,000 square feet of their eight-acre property was reportedly used for driveway space and motor courts, but because the real estate listing was private we’re unsure how many bedrooms and bathrooms the family of five have. What is known, though, is that the Carters are living lavishly with their private beach and an infinity pool that seemingly stretches into the ocean.
Power Couple’s Other Properties
Bel-Air Mansion
2017 was a big year for the “Crazy In Love” collaborators, as they proudly bought homes on both the East and West coasts. In the latter, they spent $88M on a mansion in Bel-Air, a neighborhood full of familiar celebrity faces, as Velvet Ropes points out. The Paul McClean-designed property has eight bedrooms and 11 bathrooms, sitting on 1.5 acres of land. Among its amenities are four pools, a 15-car garage, a recording studio, and bulletproof windows to keep them feeling extra secure.
Tyrone McKillen bought the house for $15M in 2015 and initially had it listed at $135M a few years later before accepting Beyoncé and Hov’s offer. Public records offer a lot of information on the Carter’s Bel-Air property, including their $149,600/month mortgage payment. Shortly after making their purchase, the family invested another $750K to install a backup generator and add a living space below one pool; you can find more photos of the mansion here.
East Hampton Waterfront Home
In total, Jay-Z and his wife spent over $114M on real estate in 2017, also adding a $25.9M home in the East Hamptons to their collection in September. The smallest of all three, this still stunning property spans two acres, with the house sitting on 12,000 square feet of that. There are seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, plus a detached guest house with a full kitchen for Miss Tina and any other relatives and friends to come crash. Luxurious details like imported Venetian floors and heated marble bathtubs make the home Beyoncé-approved, not to mention the 18th-century French Louis XV-carved stone fireplaces and Turkish limestone. You can find photos of the Carter’s only East Coast residence here.
