We Painted Our Living Room With a Toddler in the House—This Mineral Shade Changed Everything

Alkemis Paint’s low-odor, rock-derived formula made it easy to warm up our living room while keeping our toddler close by.

Our living room looked like every new build in America: clean, blank, and predictable. So on a Saturday afternoon, we finally did something about it. We opened a can of mineral paint in the shade named Terlingua—a warm, earthy shade—and started painting while our toddler played a few feet away.

We chose Alkemis paint for two reasons. First was the color itself. Terlingua has the depth of terracotta without feeling heavy and the softness of clay without reading pastel. It’s warm in the morning, richer at night, and textural. Even halfway through the first coat, we could see the walls taking on more character than they’d ever had in their original off-white.

The second reason was practicality. With a toddler in the house, anything we bring into our home has to work within real life. Alkemis is mineral-based and low-odor, with pigments derived from actual rock. We didn’t have to clear the room or send our son to another part of the house while we painted. He wandered in and out, curious about the rollers, completely unaffected by the process happening around him. The paint dried quickly and evenly, and by the time we cleaned up for the day, the room already felt transformed.

What surprised us most was how much the color changed the feel of the space. Our furniture looked intentional instead of temporary. The greens of our plant felt brighter. The decor took on more presence against the terracotta backdrop.

The photos tell the story better than anything: a living room that feels warm, layered, and lived in. There’s texture now, even though nothing but the paint has changed. The color frames the artwork, softens the corners of the room, and brings out the artful design in the rug.

A Transformation That Fits Into Real Life

What I love most is that the whole project happened in the middle of our real, everyday life. There were toys on the floor, paint rollers drying on plastic, and a toddler weaving through it all. The shift of the room was immediate. It felt closer to who we are and how we want to live.

A lot of people think that you need a full makeover to change the mood of a space, but this reminded me that sometimes it’s just one decision. Terlingua gave our living room warmth and dimension, and Alkemis made the process easy enough to do with a toddler in the room. It’s a simple transformation that changed how the entire space feels.

Every time I walk into the living room now, it feels warm and personal—exactly what we were missing. And all it took was choosing the right color and letting ourselves change the space without overthinking it.
