If you’re a homeowner, chances are you’re familiar with HOA fees. These costs usually come with rules and responsibilities based on the property type and location. While paying HOA fees can come with many benefits, they can also be costly. HOA fees vary from state to state, which is why Today’s Homeowner evaluated each state’s HOA fees and ranked the 10 states with the highest HOA fees in the U.S.
What Are HOA Fees?
Short for Homeowners Association, HOA fees are regular payments made by homeowners in a community with an established Homeowners Association. These fees are used to cover the upkeep, management, and maintenance of shared amenities and common areas within the community, such as the pool, park, and playground. HOA fees also usually contribute to services like trash removal, road maintenance, security, landscaping, and the operation of community gyms and clubhouses. The specific amount of HOA fees can vary on the community and the services provided by the Homeowners Association.
According to Today’s Homeowner, homes in communities with HOAs are valued at about 4% higher than other homes. Findings from the Foundation for Community Association Research reveal that the average monthly HOA fee in the United States is $390, or about $4,700 a year.
To find the average HOA fee in each state, Today’s Homeowner used two data points from the Foundation for Community Association Research: the total amount paid to HOAs and the number of homes in those associations. It then divided the total amount paid toward the HOA by the number of homes in HOAs to determine the average fee per home.
