Fashion historian and icon Andre Leon Talley continues to leave his fashionable impact on the world. His White Plains, New York, estate which he affectionately called his “sanctuary” hit the market for $1.25 million, according to the New York Times.
Talley passed away last year at the age of 73 from complications from Covid. Since then, his possessions have found new owners via a successful auction held by Christie’s.
According to the listing broker, Bonnie Stein, his home “is a masterpiece.”
“It has tons of character,” she said. “There is a leopard carpet throughout the house.” The house is being sold by an LLC created by fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.
Inside the Late Andre Leon Talley’s New York Home
Andre Leon Talley was the epitome of luxury, glamour and preservation, and his sanctuary reflects that. The estate is 3,600 square feet and has an impressive 11 rooms as it sits on approximately 1.2 acres at 75 Worthington Road. According to public records, the annual taxes are roughly $26,000. After his death, the city approved renaming part of the street to “Honorary Andre Leon Talley Way.”
For fans of Talley who watched when he was a special guest on Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model, they’ll know that Talley often talked about his beloved saloon—a location in his home meant for entertaining and dressing up for high tea.
According to a close friend, Alexis E. Thomas, Talley used every room of the house except for the kitchen. “Mr. Talley didn’t cook,” Thomas said. “I think he could make one or two things, but I can’t remember what those two were.” However, the kitchen leads to a beautiful patio where Talley most likely ate at.
“The house was, for André, the perfect place because it was down a private road,” she said to The Times. “His porch became a place where he spent a lot of time, particularly in warmer weather. He conducted interviews from there, and he would Zoom from there. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent with him on that porch.”
Talley’s Legal Issues Over The Home
Before he passed away, Talley encountered legal issues over his home. The house was purchased by a former friend who was an executive at Manolo Blahnik. They wanted to sell the home while Talley still lived in it. After those legal proceedings, von Furstenberg stepped in to help Talley.
“Andre was one of my very best friends,” she stated, “and when I found out there was the possibility for him to be evicted, I didn’t want that to happen.” So she bought his home. “I was happy I could help,” she explained. “That’s what friends are for — to help.”
