Furnishing any space is about filling it with decorative items that showcase your personality and style. Whether it’s a cool table or artsy rug, infusing the space with character is essential to making it feel like home. One way to do this is by hanging meaningful art. Content creator Kaprice (@kolormekaprice), known for her thrifty, vintage style, is shaking up the idea of what Black art in the home looks like by bringing back the gallery wall with a twist.
For many Black millennials, curating a collection of Black art can be a powerful statement. While there’s lots to love about artwork from storied Black artists, you can have just as much feeling with nostalgic pieces. Album covers and pictures of your favorite artists or Hollywood stars growing up can be more than memorabilia—they can be art. As an interior stylist and self-proclaimed thrift junkie, Kaprice’s social feeds are a lesson in maximalist style. In her TikTok, dedicated to the ‘90s art gallery wall in her living room, she teaches us that Black art is all around us—and that photo gallery walls are just as cool as they were decades ago.
Her approach to creating the wall was simple. Instead of loading up on works by famous artists, she turned iconic images from her adolescence into a large-scale piece of artwork. Recreating the look can be a fun weekend project that requires little skill. With the below steps, you can have your own cool ‘90s gallery wall to show off.
@kolormekaprice ✨Finally finished my gallery wall! ✨A gallery wall is important because it allows you to personalize a space and showcase your unique style. Now, I chose pictures from online and had them printed from Staples. I thrifted all of the frames from the Goodwill. Very cost effective and stylish 🔥. #interiordesign #apartmenttherapy #wayfair #90saesthetic #homedecor #livingroomideas #homeandtexture
Decide on a Color Scheme
Before you begin collecting and arranging your artwork, it’s best to decide on a color scheme. This will help you keep the look grounded and cohesive. The emerald gem tones in Kaprice’s living room created the perfect backdrop for a chic black and white gallery wall. Black and white photos with black frames also emphasize the retro feel of the artwork and tie into her vintage aesthetic.
Gather Your Artwork
This may take some time, but it’s worth putting in the extra effort. After all, the last thing you want is a collection that’s not personal. For her wall, Kaprice opted for photographs from the ‘90s and early 2000s. The eras were an iconic time for Black musicians, actors, and artists and provided lots of inspiration for this gallery wall. Sourcing the images won’t be hard. In her video, she mentions that she found many of them online and simply printed them in black and white for the retro effect.
Sourcing the Frames
Purchasing frames can be pricey, especially for a gallery wall’s worth. But this style of artwork is all about being creative. Using a mixture of different shapes and sizes can amplify the eclectic look. The key is to stick to a similar shade of black so they have a common thread. While you can purchase frames from budget-friendly stores like Ikea, Kaprice notes that your local thrift store will have just as many affordable options.
