For those of us perpetually plugged into the digital zeitgeist, it’s impossible to ignore the word demure. This term has infiltrated every corner of TikTok, dominating our FYPs, trending hashtags, and everyday lexicon, at least for this month.

The ‘demure’ phenomenon has transcended its origins, evolving from a mere buzzword into a full-fledged lifestyle movement. The context of the word isn’t confined to beauty tutorials or fashion hauls. This concept has seeped into our approach to home decor, encouraging a more thoughtful and “mindful” aesthetic.

But what does a ‘demure home’ actually entail? How can one cultivate a living space that embodies this TikTok-approved sensibility? Ahead we get into the essence of ‘demure’ and explore how to infuse your home with this sought-after vibe, all while staying along the lines of the ever-evolving standards of TikTok culture.

What Is The Demure Home Trend?

By original definition, to be demure means to be modest and reserved. However, by creator Jools Lebron (@joolieannie) the movement means to have toned-down makeup being “mindful,” in a satirical way while reporting to a professional environment. This has caught the attention of over 40 million viewers on the app.

Initially, the trend was towards having a “fierce beat,” but many home decor and lifestyle aficionados have taken to the app to give us a master lesson on what it means to have a “Demure Home.”

In a TikTok video, content creator Ethan Gaskill (@ethancgaskill) broke down a few tips on how to achieve a demure home.

No Messy Homes

“Dirty, messy houses are not demure,” Gaskill explains. In many Black households, the old saying goes, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” And Gaskill echoes this passed down sentiment saying, “Clean in moderation. We pick up as we go. If we leave one or two things out, it’s okay.”

Focus On Lighting

Gaskill says that overhead lighting is aged and dated. To have a demure home, look for floor lamps, wall lamps, table lamps, and candles. “Very soft, very romantic, very demure.” The creator shares.

Don’t Overdo Home Scents

Personally, I love a different candle burning in each room in a home. However, Gaskill says this most likely isn’t very demure. “When it comes to smells, we keep it classy,” the creator advises. “You don’t need five candles burning at once that smell like cupcakes and Axe body spray.”

Mix and Match Your Furniture

“We don’t buy everything brand new. We mix new and old.” Gaskill says in the video. As someone who mixes and matches across all lifestyle categories, I can say this is a true statement. Nothing adds more character and personality than going against the grain and adding old texture with new charm to spice things up.
