With nearly two decades in the game and counting, Kevin Durant is surely considered one of the NBA’s most notable players. The Washington D.C. native, who has been with the Phoenix Suns franchise since the 2023 season, has garnered a reputation for his tenacity on the court, his impeccable scoring averages and his multiple MVP honors. Though the Suns have expressed interest in signing Durant to a multi-million dollar extension, it’s beginning to look like the star power forward won’t be coming to an agreement with the team this year. Fans are currently preparing for the news of a possible trade, with the Miami Heat favored to take Durant in exchange for some rookie prospects which could reshape the future of both teams. As you can imagine, all this talk about KD’s next move is leaving many fans to wonder where the icon will live once the dust settles on his new contract.
Since he may be about to make a cross-country move, now seems like as good a time as any to look into the real estate holdings of Kevin Durant, and see what we can learn from his buying habits. The Brooklyn Nets alumnus has purchased many different properties over the course of his thriving career, and moved around several times in accordance with his NBA trades. With any luck, Durant may soon land a long-term home close to his preferred practice facilities. Luckily, the 36-year-old has purchased property along both coasts in the past, including a penthouse right in Miami, so he’ll know exactly what to look for while home shopping if the Heat really does scoop him up.
KD’s First Major Purchase in Mercer Island, Washington
Long before Kevin Durant was the household name that he is today, he got his start with the Seattle SuperSonics. At the age of 19, he was chosen as the second overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, and packed his bags for the Pacific Northwest shortly thereafter. His first home purchase, a 6,000 square foot abode on Washington’s Mercer Island, came at a steep asking price of just under $3 million. Luckily, Durant’s inaugural season with the pros quickly established him as a threat on the NBA court, allowing him to bargain for larger and larger contracts with time. Before long, that $3 million asking price would become a minor footnote in the forward’s expenses.
Kevin Durant’s first home featured 5 bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms, a fully-stocked wet bar and wine cellar, a home theater equipped with a massive screening area and large, imposing French doors which opened up to a private back yard. Despite relishing in the beauty of this home, KD wasn’t able to live in it for very long, as the SuperSonics were moved to Oklahoma City just a year after his purchase. Despite this adjustment, Durant held on to the property for another three years, and ultimately sold it at a $400,000 loss in 2013, per the Mercer Island Reporter.
Putting Down Roots in Oklahoma City
After the SuperSonics rebranded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kevin Durant envisioned a long-term commitment to the 405. In 2011, he purchased a massive property in a gated OKC community for the price of $1.8 million. This spacious compound included the 3,600 square foot main house, a 2,000 square foot guest home and a spacious pool deck with a full spa. The inside of the gorgeous home featured vaulted ceilings, stainless steel surfaces and a wood-burning fireplace, offering a stunning blend of rustic country living and modern amenities. Both the main house and guest house featured fully stocked kitchens, suitable for home cooking or catered meals, with plenty of additional room to host family, friends or teammates for a post-playoff celebration.
Just two years later, Durant made another major purchase in OKC, by snatching up a pair of neighboring townhouses for a combined total of $1.8 million. The brownstone homes, located in Oklahoma’s Deep Deuce neighborhood, were then renovated into a single massive property, spanning over 7,000 square feet in total. Once the renovations were finished, the home boasted 6 beds, 9 baths and three floors loaded with special amenities. The home had a full billiard room, a cinema style home theater and a fully decked-out sauna, in addition to a massive kitchen space and tons of room to host guests.
In 2016, Kevin Durant was ready to hang up his jersey and move from the Oklahoma City Thunder to California’s Golden State Warriors. In preparation for this move, the NBA all-star listed all of his OKC properties for sale, and eventually sold off all three units for a combined total of $2.3 million. Obviously, this figure represents a steep discount from his original purchase price, especially when taking into consideration the more than $3 million that he poured into renovations on the neighboring brownstones alone. Even still, Kevin Durant was on to bigger and better things, as he would go on to win back-to-back championship titles with the Warriors.
Kevin Durant’s Miami and Manhattan Penthouses
Though KD has never played for the Heat, he has spent his fair share of time living lavish in the Sunshine State. In 2011, around the same time he purchased his first OKC property, Durant also snagged a 3,500 square foot condo in the heart of Miami. The penthouse home came loaded with floor-to-ceiling windows, panoramic ocean views and a full suite of modern amenities. KD is said to have designed the condo’s home theater and sound system himself, in a testament to his love of music and cinema. Just outside the sky-high penthouse, a wraparound terrace served as a perfect place to host evening events, offering a great view of the nearby islands and exposure to the gorgeous skyline of the city.
Like the previously mentioned units, Kevin Durant offloaded his Miami home in advance of his move to the Warriors. In 2015, he placed the residence up for sale, and ultimately took home a sizable profit after the unit went for $3.15 million,. While we know very little about the new owners, Architectural Digest reported that the penthouse is currently available to rent for a staggering price tag of more than $15,000 per month. If KD does wind up heading to Miami for the forthcoming NBA season, maybe he can rent out the old digs while shopping for a new long-term home.
It seems that Kevin Durant has a slight preference toward West Coast real estate, but we shouldn’t discount the amount of property he’s invested in along the East Coast as well. Most recently, Durant is said to have been living in a Manhattan penthouse, which he apparently took ownership of in 2022. For now, it’s unclear whether he owns this unit, or is simply renting it, though reporters who have been on the inside have described the apartment as sleek, stylish and “infinitely long.” True to his nature, KD has outfitted this sky-high abode with a full suite of gym equipment, as well as a trophy room where he can display the fruits of his many accomplishments on the court.
A Guide to the Baller’s California Properties
After settling into his new role on the Golden State Warriors, Durant went on to purchase a number of properties along the West Coast. Before settling down for a long-term commitment, KD is said to have rented out a 9,000 square foot mansion in Oakland, to the tune of roughly $13,000 per month. The property, situated atop a set of rolling Bay Area hills, offered 7 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms and a massive enclosed yard, shaded by the surrounding trees. Inside, a gorgeous curved staircase served as the centerpiece of the open floor plan home, with yet another home theater, as well as a chef’s kitchen and a number of other modern amenities.
Though Durant continued staying in this home on and off throughout his time with the Warriors, he also purchased a mansion in 2018, which served as his primary residence during that time. Situated in the extremely wealthy Malibu region, this property came with a price tag of over $12 million. Much like the other homes on this list, Durant’s Malibu abode contained multiple bedrooms, bathrooms and a full media room where he could screen his favorite films in high definition. Some of the key details that set this 5,100 square foot waterfront property apart from the others include a fully stocked gym where KD could train with some of his teammates, as well as an ocean-view deck with floor-to-ceiling glass, allowing the baller to enjoy the incredible beach view all year long.
Finally, we have Kevin Durant’s most expensive purchase thus far, with a $15.6 million mansion in the Hidden Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. The property was purchased in 2021 as a lot in park of an off-market deal. From there, Durant was free to have his personal spec mansion built to his exact liking, resulting in a 10,000 square foot farmhouse-style building, centered on a nearly two-acre plot. For now, not much is known about the interior of this multi-million dollar home, though Durant has shared some images of the outside via social media. The backyard includes a sprawling pool with a massive deck, along with a full outdoor kitchen, perfect for grilling by the pool during family gatherings and Summer cookouts.
Does Kevin Durant Still Live in California?
Though KD has kept the details of his Hidden Hills mansion mostly under wraps, it seems that the massive residence is the only West Coast property that the two-time NBA champion still owns to this day. Durant stopped staying in the Oakland rental some time in 2019. The estate was later listed on sale for nearly $6 million in total. He sold his Malibu home on the beach around the same time, likely in preparation for his L.A. development. Durant managed to score a $12.15 million return for his Malibu home, meaning he earned a small profit from the purchase, save for any property investments he may have made in the roughly 18 months that he owned it.
What’s Next for KD and His Bachelor Pad(s)?
While KD’s on-the-court prowess has made him an A-list superstar, his buying habits seem to have become more private with each passing year. Almost nothing is known about his Phoenix, Arizona area residence, which he is said to have purchased after being traded to the Suns in 2023. This means that we likely won’t hear much about Durant’s next major home purchase, unless he decides to publicly advertise his new home via social media. No matter what team the Washington, D.C. native winds up shooting for this NBA season, we can rest assured he’ll be training in style. This is especially true given that his estimated net worth of $300 million and counting ensures that he’ll always have options when it comes to home-buying.
