Thanks to the internet, supporting a Black-owned business is now easier than ever before. You can find everything you need from Black-owned businesses online, from hair supplies to books to home decor. Black-owned businesses help distribute financial prosperity across the Black community, amplifying Black professionals and creating jobs for Black people. And Yowie, a creative Black business located in Philadelphia, has successfully mastered doing all that and more.
Meet Yowie
Yowie is a Black-owned and operated boutique hotel, shop, and design studio in Philly. Shannon Maldonado started the company in 2016. At the time, it was just a small shop, but today, it’s complete with a bustling boutique hotel and design studio. Not only does the Yowie hotel provide super-luxe accommodations and artisanal goods, but its shop also serves as a platform to highlight the work of Black creatives that may otherwise go unseen.
Its Gift Collection features a variety of products from Black, Latinx, and AAPI artists. There, you can find everything you need for your home, from miniature lamps to stone jars. The best part? Not only do you receive a really cool product, but you also get to support a Black business in the process.
The Great Thing About Yowie
The company is an authority on creating experiences, not just through its hotel and design studio, but its product selection as well. If you enjoy fun and artistic products that have a lot of personality, you’ll love their home decor. The company was even touted as “The Coolest Shop in Philadelphia” by food and entertainment magazine Bon Appétit in 2019.
At Yowie, you can expect to find home decor in a wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes. From bright and colorful planters to bold handcrafted mugs in varying patterns, the store is a goldmine for the homeowner with a flair for the creative.
Beyond home decor, the company uses its design studio as a safe haven for artists to create art that represents their culture and community. Yowie celebrates diversity in creativity in every way. And judging by their rapid growth, they have no plans of stopping.
