6 Hacks You'll Want To Use on Your Next Laundry Day

Sometimes, your laundry routine just needs a little upgrade.

Over the years, we’ve experienced several innovations in laundry. Detergent has evolved into ultra-concentrated pods, softener has expanded to include tiny, perfumed pearls that actually last between washes and washers and dryers themselves look more like a NASA spaceship than an appliance. Still, laundry has more or less the same approach—wash, dry, fold and put away. If you’re ready to mix things up in your laundry game, try these hacks to take a smarter and more efficient approach.

1. Embrace the power of pre-treating.

Stains happen, whether it’s a splash of coffee or a rogue smear of lipstick. But don’t let them ruin your favorite garments. Keep a trusty spray bottle filled with a mixture of water and detergent on hand for quick and easy pre-treating. As soon as a stain rears its ugly head, give it a spritz and watch it disappear before your eyes.

2. Get quality laundry products.

Detergent is a cost that can add up, especially if you have a big household. While it may be tempting to grab whatever detergent is on sale, sometimes it’s more beneficial to go in on high-quality products that pay off in the long run.

How is that possible? Some detergents have higher concentrations of active ingredients, which means you’re getting more cleaning power per scoop. These concentrated formulas may cost a bit more upfront, but they tend to last longer and require less product per load.

But how do you identify these high-concentration detergents? It’s all in the label. Look for terms like “ultra” or “concentrated” on the packaging. These indicate that the product is more potent and will likely deliver better results. Additionally, pay attention to the recommended dosage. If a detergent requires only a small amount per load, chances are it’s a concentrated formula. In addition to concentration, it’s also worth taking a second look at the ingredients list. Consider detergents that are free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies.

3. Master the art of folding.

Up there with cleaning the kitchen, folding laundry is the chore that never seems to end. But there is a way to cut your folding time in half, by using a simple tool called a folding board.

It’s a flat, three-panel board designed to help you achieve perfectly folded clothes with minimal effort. You can go all out and get a fancy one or take the DIY route by making your own from a piece of cardboard. Just lay your garment flat on the board, fold the edges in, and that’s it! You’re left with a perfectly crisp shirt or neatly folded pair of pants.

4. Optimize your laundry schedule.

Did you know that the time of day you do your laundry can make a difference in your energy consumption? It’s true! Avoid peak hours when energy usage is at its highest, and try for early mornings or late evenings instead.

5. Say goodbye to static.

Static cling—it’s the bane of every laundry enthusiast’s existence. But fear not, there’s a simple solution: aluminum foil. That’s right, just toss a crumpled-up ball of aluminum foil into the dryer with your clothes, and watch as static becomes a thing of the past. Your clothes will come out feeling fresh, soft, and completely static-free.

6. Keep your washer and dryer clean.

Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to show your washer and dryer some love. Make it a habit to regularly clean both appliances to prevent the buildup of dirt, lint, and other debris.

Start by cleaning the exterior of both appliances with a gentle detergent and warm water to remove any dirt or grime buildup. Then, tackle the inside by wiping down the drum and door seals to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Take it a step further by cleaning out the lint trap in your dryer after every use. This simple task helps prevent fire hazards and creates optimal airflow, allowing your dryer to work more efficiently and effectively.

For your washer, consider running a cleaning cycle with vinegar or a specialized washing machine cleaner once a month to remove any built-up residue and odors. Additionally, check the hoses and connections for any signs of wear or damage, and replace them if necessary to prevent leaks and water damage.
