Looking for delicious, easy to make desserts to serve this holiday season? This is the Christmas Crack recipe you’ve been waiting for. The name alone probably already got your attention if you have never heard of it, but it will do more than just that. Christmas Crack is a popular holiday treat made with crackers, caramel, chocolate and optionally nuts. It is also referred to as some variation of Chocolate and Caramel saltine crackers. Bake this treat for a holiday party, a dessert for Christmas Day or just to treat yourself for the holiday season.

Christmas Crack Recipe

Christmas nougat with almond, orange and chocolate over dark green background. Ready to eat.

Ingredients

1 sleeve of saltine crackers (about 40 crackers)

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

1 cup packed light brown sugar

2 cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips

1 cup chopped nuts (optional, such as pecans or walnuts)

Festive sprinkles or toppings (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture is smooth and begins to boil. Let it boil for about 3 minutes without stirring.
  4. Carefully pour the hot caramel mixture over the saltine crackers, spreading it evenly to cover them completely.
  5. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-7 minutes. The caramel will bubble and spread over the crackers.
  6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel layer. Let them sit for a few minutes to soften and melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the surface using a spatula.
  7. If you’re using nuts, sprinkle them over the melted chocolate while it’s still soft.
  8. For a festive touch, you can add sprinkles or any other toppings you prefer.
  9. Let the Christmas Crack cool at room temperature until the chocolate sets, or you can speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator.
  10. Once completely cooled and set, break the Christmas Crack into pieces. Enjoy!

Christmas Crack Topping Ideas

Aside from the chocolate and caramel, how can you dress up your new favorite treat? Plenty of ways! The best thing about most Christmas Crack recipes is that they are easily customizable. You can use different types of crackers, chocolates, nuts or even add toppings to suit your preferences. Add mini marshmallows to give it a taste that resembles roasting marshmallows and making sโ€™mores by a fire. Or top it with a little bit of cinnamon to give it even more of a Christmastime flavor. Go crazy and have fun with this easy recipe this holiday season.

Sprinkles are a classic choice, of course: find ones in unique, festive shapes, or opt for simple colors like red, green, white, or gold. Nonpareils will add touches of pearly shine. If you want to add extra chocolate, holiday M&Ms will add color, texture, and taste to your Christmas crack.

Nuts will add crunch, and pistachios or chestnuts are a classic Christmas choice. Dried cranberries and white chocolate is festive and delicious as a Christmas crack topping.
