Eclectic and Cozy: How To Design a Welcoming Space Like Designer Tamara McLaughlin

September 5, 2023 at 4:38 PM PST

There’s something special about being welcomed into a designer’s home. Taking a step into their abode feels like entering their creative mind. That’s how it felt when we were invited to designer Tamara McLaughlin’s Los Angeles pad for the third episode of Home & Texture’s House Tours season two.

“My home is a reflection of me. My perky personality, I think, comes out in my design style,” McLaughlin shares in the episode. Although there are elements of mid-century modern design in her home, she describes her style as being eclectic.

Through a mixture of colors, textures, and patterns, McLaughlin executes her eclectic design style flawlessly in her home. One feature we especially love is her addition of chandeliers to every room. “I always say, make sure your chandeliers have dimmers on them, so you can have different ambiance to make it kinda sexy and cool,” she shares.

Here’s how you can design an eclectic home that will make guests feel welcomed and cozy, like Tara McLaughlin’s home.

Layer with Pillows and Throws

Pillows and throws are go-to items when curating a cozy atmosphere. Mix and match a variety of textures like velvet, faux fur, and knit fabrics for an eclectic feel. These soft layers not only add an element of comfort but also bring in visual interest.

Add Personalized Art and Decor

Don’t shy away from incorporating art pieces and decor that resonate with you. Whether it’s Basquiat prints like McLaughlin has throughout her home or a quirky sculpture, these elements contribute to the eclectic feel of your home and serve as a conversation starter for guests.

Focus on Lighting

As McLaughlin advises, invest in good lighting. From table lamps with vintage shades to sleek modern floor lamps, lighting can change the entire vibe of a room.

An eclectic home isn’t just a mishmash of different styles—it’s a carefully curated space that tells a story. When executed well, it reflects your unique personality and serves as a cozy, welcoming haven for your guests.
